Muon plays an important role in elementary particle, nuclear and atomic physics. Muon was discovered in 1936 in cosmic radiation. At present, it is very important in the framework of the Standard Model. With the discovery of a charm quantum number, muon and the accompanying muon neutrino play an important role in the quark-lepton model of elementary particles being combined in the second generation of the Standard Model. Muonic processes provide important information on the low energy limit of the weak interaction. This book describes the various aspects of muon physics, taking into account the most recent experiments conducted.

This book provides an authoritative, up to date, overview of the field of chiral dynamics, and also provides an excellent introduction to the field. The workshop is known for the interplay of theory and experiment and as a meeting place for most of the leading researchers in the field.

This volume reviews recent advances in both theoretical and experimental studies in the field of medium energy physics. The following topics are covered: hadronic structures; hadron-hadron interactions; QCD and its model theory; meson physics; medium and high energy lepton-nucleus interactions; weak interaction and double-βdecay in nuclei; p-p and p-nucleus interactions; systems with strangeness and hypernuclei; and high energy p-A and A-A collisions and QGP.

Madam Chien Shiung Wu, the great physicist of 20th century physics, passed away in February 1997. Born in 1912, she became a towering scientific figure in the second half of the century. Madam Wu and Madame Curie will forever be commemorated as the two great female physicists of the 20th century. On 16-18 August 1997, scientists from around the globe, many of them distinguished in their own right, gathered in Nanjing, where Madam Wu spent her undergraduate years to celebrate the glorious achievements of the great lady. This important volume constitutes the proceedings of the conference. The main advances in fundamental symmetry, nuclear, particle and general physics since parity symmetry breaking and the prospects at the turn of the century are addressed by world-renowned experts. The historical developments in the studies of the β-decay mechanism, vector current conservation, parity, charge conjugation and time reversal nonconservation are vividly depicted by Madam Wu's close friends, including several Nobel laureates.

The Brentwood Summer Institute on Nuclear and Particle Physics at Intermediate Energies was the second of its kind organised by the TRIUMF group of Universities, the first taking place at Banff in 1970. With the advent of initial beams at the new meson facilities at LAMPF, SIN, NEVIS, CERN S.C. and TRIUMF it was an eminently suitable time for an in-depth study of some of the science which will be possible when these accelerators achieve their design intensities in proton and meson beams. The organizing committee, comprising: Univ. of Alberta G.A. Beer Univ. of Victoria J.M. Cameron J.M. McMillan U.B.C. D.F. Measday U.B.C. R.M. Pearce Univ. of Victoria J.E.D. Pearson U.B.C. J.B. Warren U.B.C. wishes to acknowledge the financial support provided by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the National Research Council of Canada, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., without which the Institute could not have been held. Also we wish to acknowledge the helpful advice of the Scientific Committee of NATO and of Dr. T. Kester, Secretary of this Committee. Many persons from the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia helped with the local arrangements and we are grateful to them and particularly to the staff of Brentwood College who made the stay of the participants such a pleasant one.
