Rambling Recollections, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Rambling Recollections, Vol. 1 of 2 The title Of this book 'conveys my meaning clearly. It is not an autobiography, nor even a continuous narrative. It is founded on no diary or record. Whatever the contents of the book - whether narrative or anecdotic - they are given just as they come unbidden into my memory, which is not a bad one, though possibly not so exact as I could wish. I have not attempted to be strictly accurate as to chronological order, though the events described harmonise with the period in connection with which they appear. By anticipa tion, therefore, I fully recognise the defects arising from want Of premeditation. Any apologies that may be required of me, I make at once. I am prepared to accept criticism without remonstrance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Recollections of Rambles at the South (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Recollections of Rambles at the South NO new-england boy ever had a happier home, or kinder parents, and other friends, than I. With them I lived and labored, cheerfully and happily, till I was almost as large as I am now, before I ever went thirty miles from my father's chimney. True, I had my seasons of discontent, like many other boys. I wanted to be a printer - li wanted to be a professional man - I wanted to travel - I wanted to do (at times, I mean) sundry other things. But my strongest de sire, after all, was to ramble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rough Recollections of Rambles Abroàd and at Home, Vol. 2 of 3 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Rough Recollections of Rambles Abroad and at Home, Vol. 2 of 3 But De Rosny was not yet thus depraved. The world, in.which he had mingled as the lark does with the clouds, which damp but sully not its win gs, had perhaps an feebled his virtuous energies, but had not utterly contaminated the powers of his highly com prehensive and noble nature. He had mixed in all the gaieties and gallantries of fashion able life; and - as every ardent and wilful spirit must do - shared in some of its follies; but the venom had not impregnated his blood, nor had the voice of conscience - that beautiful evidence of the Creator's love for the Created - ceased to warn him, or to te proach him when the sweet but perilous sleep 'of voluptuousness had thrown his thinking faculties into forgetfulness. Past Times and Pastimes, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Past Times and Pastimes, Vol. 1 of 2 When I bethought me to spend the autumn evenings in jotting down reminiscences, I had no desire to write a biography or an outline of history. I could have done so even of it had been my wish, for the material necessary for the purpose was lacking, and I could not view Irish politics with an impartial eye. Nevertheless, when I came to think about politics and events in Ireland, some materials was available, and I have referred to it. In all other respects I had to rely entirely on memory, for the following reason. In the summer of 1894 my yacht Valkyrie II. was in collision with Satanita at Hunter's Quay on the Clyde, and sank in about four minute. Of course everything went down with her, and, for a long time after, the disappearance of anything was accounted for by "It must have gone down in Valkyrie." About some of the object I had kept did go to the bottom of the sea in over twenty fathoms of water, and I never had the courage to re-write the diary or to start another. I could not, therefore, place events in proper chronological order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
