This multi-author book by experts in Central Asia draws together the key issues that confront the peoples of these lands as the New Silk Road takes shape. The Editors provide an overview of information and background about rangelands, grasslands and pasturelands in nine Silk Road countries as well as their productivity and ecological function. The authors discuss the status, future prospects and strategies to achieve sustainable management of rangelands and grasslands in the context of the infrastructure developments and other New Silk Road building activities in Central Asia. They identify problems and hazards associated with global change, including climate change in Silk Road countries. This book will act as a vehicle to promote knowledge useful for managing rangelands, grasslands and pasture lands along the Silk Road, from Mongolia in the East to Iran in the West. No region of the world has such vast and largely undeveloped areas of land that is so strategically placed between Europe to the west, Asia to the east, and Russia acting as huge presence to the north. For ages, these vast lands have been the conduit through which trade, commerce, learning and religious beliefs have spread. For millennia, the resource base (rivers, lakes, and various types of land including vast steppes, grasslands and other forms of rangelands) have supported lives and livelihoods of millions of people, as goods and ideas flowed in both directions along the vast network of trade routes that came to be known as the Silk Road. In the past, there have been many challenges, not the least of which was the issue of distance (over 6000 km. from China to the eastern edge Europe). In modern times, there has been a renewed interest in these vast lands that contain the worlds highest mountains, some of the driest deserts and provide sustenance for millions of people and their livestock as well as an irreplaceable wealth of plant and animal diversity. Accelerated economic activity, which is mainly infrastructure development (pipelines, highways, railways), is both a threat and an opportunity especially when set against a background of global change, including climatic shifts that threaten water supplies and livelihoods on a scale never before experienced. The focus of the authors' is on the extensive rangelands and grasslands, as well as the peoples whose livelihoods depend on the development of sustainable land management. In particular, they analyse and provide commentary of the transformative adaptations that are required if the Silk Road and its inhabitants are to survive into the twenty-second century and beyond.




Sustainable Land Management in Greater Central Asia

Understanding the role of ruminant systems on greenhouse gas emissions and soil health in selected Central Asian countries

Like many other economies in transition, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan face the dual challenge of promoting development and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and ruminant systems are central for achieving both goals. Given the important economic, nutritional and environmental roles that ruminant systems play in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, we conducted a GHG assessment (based on Tier 2 methodology according 2006 IPCC Guidelines) to understand the role of ruminants and grasslands in emissions and soil organic carbon sequestration in the region. This study found that enteric methane and manure management are the predominant sources of emissions from cattle systems; however, the study found that regions with high GHG emissions from the cattle systems also had the highest soil carbon stocks. This is mainly due to the high apportion of carbon into the soil from manure and organic amendments. Thus, in these regions, tailored practices could likely reduce GHG emissions through practices that can increase organic carbon storage. This project was the first step in understanding the role of ruminants through advanced GHG accounting methods and serve as a basis for these countries to take on larger climate investment projects and catalyse climate action through sustainable livestock development.




Grasslands of the World

This book begins with a brief account of the extraordinary sequence of events that led to emergence of grasslands as major vegetation formations that now occupy some of the driest and hottest and the highest and coldest on earth as well as vast steppes and prairies in more temperate climes. It is the story of grasses successfully competing with forests and woodlands, aided and abetted by grazing herbivores and by humans and their use of fire as a tool. It is a story of adaptation to changing climates and the changing biophysical environments. A major focus of the book is the Palaearctic biogeographic realm that extends over some 45 million km2 and thus more than 1/3 of the terrestrial ice-free surface on Earth. It comprises extensive grasslands of different types and origin, which can be subdivided into (1) natural grasslands with (1a) steppes (climatogenic in dry climates), (1b) arctic-alpine grasslands (climatogenic in cold climates) and (1c) azonal and extrazonal grasslands (pedogenic and topogenic) as well as (2) secondary grasslands created and sustained by human activities, such as livestock grazing, mowing or burning. Grasslands of the Palaearctic do not only form a major basis for the agriculture of the region and thus its food supply, but are also crucial for other ecosystem services and host a supra proportional part of the realm’s plant and animal diversity. To reflect that suitability of grasslands for biodiversity strongly depends on their state, we apply the term High Nature Value grassland to those natural grasslands that are not degraded (in good state) and those secondary grasslands that are not intensified (semi-natural). The situation in a variety of countries where grasslands are evolving under the influence of global climate change is also considered. Case studies are presented on Southern Africa, Eastern Africa, India, China, South America, North America and Australia. The concluding chapter examines a set of themes arising from the chapters that make up the bulk of this book. The following provide a focus: recent history of grassland biomes – brief recap of current thinking and recent trends with special reference to dry grasslands in the Palearctic regions; the current status of grasslands and germplasm resources (biodiversity) – an overview; management systems that ensure sustainability; how to recover degraded grasslands; socio-economic issues and considerations in grassland management; the impacts of environmental problems in grasslands such as future climate change and intensification and the problems/prospects facing pastoralists and other grassland-based livestock producers.

This book comprehensively covers the topics of origin and distribution, evolution and types, regional and global importance, biodiversity conservation, plant-soil interfaces, ecosystem functions and services, social-ecological systems, climate change adaptations, land degradation and restoration, grazing management and pastoral production, and sustainable future of the grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), which is a globally unique eco-region called the "Roof of the World" because of its high elevation, “Third Pole on Earth" because of its alpine environment and the "Water Tower in Asia" because of its headwater location. The grassland ecosystem covers above 60% of QTP, which is about 2.5 million km2, 1/4 of Chinese total territorial lands. The grassland ecosystem of the QTP (the Third Pole) is an important part of the palaearctic region, which features alpine cover and low oxygen. The Third Pole's grasslands not only provide important ecosystem functions such as biodiversity conservation, carbon storage, water resource regulation, climate control, and natural disaster mitigation at a global scale, but also provide critical ecosystem services such as pastoral production, cultural inheritance, and tourism and recreation at local and regional scales. The Prehistory of the Silk Road

In ancient and medieval times, the Silk Road was of great importance to the transport of peoples, goods, and ideas between the East and the West. A vast network of trade routes, it connected the diverse geographies and populations of China, the Eurasian Steppe, Central Asia, India, Western Asia, and Europe. Although its main use was for importing silk from China, traders moving in the opposite direction carried to China jewelry, glassware, and other exotic goods from the Mediterranean, jade from Khotan, and horses and furs from the nomads of the Steppe. In both directions, technology and ideologies were transmitted. The Silk Road brought together the achievements of the different peoples of Eurasia to advance the Old World as a whole. The majority of the Silk Road routes passed through the Eurasian Steppe, whose nomadic people were participants and mediators in its economic and cultural exchanges.
