The Anaerobe Discussion Group (ADG) organised has four I-ntern-ational College, Symposia, all at Churchill Cambridge. The first was held in July 1979, the second in July 1981, the third in July 1983, and this, the fourth, on July 26-28th, 1985. The proceedings of each of these meetings have been published (see below). As on previous occasions, the scientific programme was designed appeal to the wide range to of interests represented by ADG members. The meeting was attended by delegates from allover the world, including medical mic- biologists, veterinarians, dentists, biochemists, gene- cists and scientists from several other disciplines, all of whom share a common interest in anaerobic mic- organisms. The interchange of scientific information and ideas between the delegates in such pleasant surroundings was, as always, a valuable and rewarding experience. Unlike previous Biennial Symposia in the series, this meeting was sponsored by a number of companies rather than by a single sponsor. Despite some intitial concern by the organising committee, this arrangement worked well and we are extremely grateful to all the companies who supported the meeting so generously. The names of the sponsors are listed individually in the acknowledgements section. We were also very pleased to welcome those companies who took part in the Trade Show during the meeting. This book contains the papers given by invited contributors, followed by abstracts poster of the demonstration presented at the meeting.

Ideal for both practitioners and students, this comprehensive resource covers the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious disease in horses. Organized by infectious agent — virus, bacterial and rickettsial, protazoal, and fungal — it includes complete coverage of the individual diseases caused by each type of agent. A section on clinical problems examines conditions such as ocular infections, CNS infections, and skin infections. It also addresses the importance of preventing and controlling infectious disease outbreaks with coverage of epidemiology, biosecurity, antimicrobial therapy, and recognizing foreign equine diseases. - Full-color photos and illustrations provide clear, accurate representations of the clinical appearance of infectious diseases. - Features the most recent information on the global threat of newly emergent diseases such as African Horse Sickness. - Includes a comprehensive section on the prevention and control of infectious diseases. - More than 60 expert contributors share their knowledge and expertise in equine infectious disease. - A companion CD-ROM, packaged with the book, includes complete references linked to PubMed. - NEW! The most up-to-date coverage of equine piroplasmosis reflects what experts have learned as more outbreaks of this tick-borne disease have occurred in the US. - NEW! Content on EHV-1 keeps you current on the diagnosis and treatment of this potentially serious disease in horses. - NEW! Information on how global climate changes are creating more diseases in horses keeps you alert to the possibilities of new and emerging diseases worldwide. - NEW! Expanded coverage of biosecurity on farms and in veterinary practices helps you develop an effective biosecurity program and emphasizes how to isolate or eliminate the source of infectious agents. - NEW! Additional clinical algorithms offer detailed prevention strategies in addition to diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines. - NEW! New appendix of product and diagnostic test kit manufacturers on the companion website, gives you access to the most current products and advances available in equine medicine.

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms (or microbes), which include bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and even prions. In short, microbiology refers to the study of life and organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Microorganisms are found in almost every habitat present in nature and are vital to humans and the environment. While some microbes are harmful, causing diseases that harm and kill people, animals, and plants, they are exploited by researchers. They have uses in food, water treatment, science and medicine, energy, warfare, and much more. This new book presents a collection of new research and studies covering advances in microbiology dealing with medicine, agriculture, and more.

Anaerobic Infections in Humans focuses on the human diseases caused by anaerobic bacteria. This book acknowledges the depth and breadth of the role of anaerobes in diseases of humans, and provides comprehensive reviews by internationally recognized authorities on the various disease states. The book begins with the classification and taxonomy of anaerobes and the laboratory diagnosis and therapy of anaerobic infections in humans. Infection of different body parts are discussed separately in each chapter. The book also looks into the in vitro susceptibility data for anaerobic bacteria and the mechanisms of resistance and resistance transfer in anaerobic bacteria.
