Undergraduate nursing students are voicing a high level of test anxiety related to the high stakes testing within their learning environment. Test anxiety has been well documented in nursing education (Bartlett, Taylor, & Nelson, 2016; Duty, Christian, Loftus, & Zappi, 2016; Gibson, 2014). Quinn and Peters (2016) noted that the "presence of high-stakes comprehensive examinations and the consequences of poor performance complicates test anxiety for nursing students" (p. 146). High stakes testing is not a new educational concept, yet test anxiety continues to escalate each year, especially in nursing (Quinn & Peters, 2016). Text anxiety interventions within the curriculum may prove helpful in nursing students' success. Within studies pertaining to test anxiety, mindfulness has helped decrease test anxiety (Bamber & Schneider, 2016; Ratanasiripong et al., 2015; Spadaro & Hunker, 2016). Mindfulness is considered a strategy used in the third wave of behavioral change approaches; therefore, systematic desensitization was used in a mindfulness intervention for test anxiety. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the impact a mindfulness intervention, using systematic desensitization, had on community college nursing students' test anxiety levels and test scores. Data were collected and analyzed using a sample of 107 associate degree nursing students from a community college in Texas. Mindfulness Meditation as a Stress Reduction Technique in Undergraduate Nursing Students

"Background: Strengthening attention-regulation efficiency of nurse graduates is important to the quality and safety of nursing practice in increasingly complex and cognitively distracting workplace environments (Burger & Lockhart, 2017). Academic and clinical stressors are experienced by most nursing students enrolled in a nursing program (Yuksel & Yilmaz, 2020). Local problem: Heavy academic workloads, stressors from clinical placements such as complex patient care and lack of effective coping strategies for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: The participant population for this project included 8 undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a traditional baccalaureate program at a Southern Louisiana University. (n=8). Participation in the project was voluntary. Intervention: The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to evaluate the stress perception of undergraduate nursing students utilizing mindfulness meditation. This would be done through an app from the participants' smartphone device 5 days per week for 8 weeks. Results: The evaluation of the project's outcomes after completion of the mindfulness meditation program revealed that there was a 43% decrease in mean scores from pre- to post-intervention. Evaluation of this EBP project was determined by setting a benchmark to see a 25% decrease in mean scores of participants' perceived stress. Conclusions: Given the connection between nurses' attention regulation capacity and safe patient care, the effectiveness of mindfulness techniques has proven to be a reliable tool when it comes to managing the stress perception of nursing students. Utilization of stress management techniques in nursing education could increase student performance and decrease attrition rates. Contemplative Practices and Post-secondary Well-being


Book Description

Students encounter numerous sources of stress in college from school work to examinations. A proposed method for reducing test related anxiety is contemplative practice (namely, mindfulness meditation and expressive writing). These interventions were used immediately prior to an exam to determine effectiveness on students’ mood and test grade. Although the study produced few statistically significant results, a promising trend in utilizing these interventions for increasing exam grades, increasing positive mood, and decreasing negative mood was uncovered. Each intervention appears to have dissimilar effects on different types of students (i.e., varying degrees of dispositional mindfulness and cognitive test anxiety; for example, students high in trait mindfulness had beneficial changes after practicing the meditation, but students low in trait mindfulness responded more to the exam expressive writing intervention). However, limitations of the study (such as a small sample size) require future investigations before determining the exact effects of these practices.

The Effect of Meditation on Mindfulness, Depression, Stress, and Anxiety in Nursing Students

Simple main effects analyses showed a reduction in symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety, as well as a significant increase in reported feelings of mindfulness in the experimental group.
