"In 2015, Juan M. del Nido went on hundreds of taxi rides in Buenos Aires, conducting ethnographic work on the taxi industry. But by mid-April 2016, Uber launched its platform in Buenos Aires, engulfing drivers, passengers, the press, and greater general public into a frenzied hysteria that involved courts of law, political platforms, and threats of violence. This book examines not only how the taxi industry made sense of the sudden and ubiquitous presence of Uber in Argentina, but also how the assumed efficiency and objectivity of Uber's algorithmic methods catalyzed new forms of understanding ethics, responsibility and professional advancement in the Argentinean context. Tightly entwined with the politics of labor, trade, institutions, and economic life, del Nido reveals how Uber came to signify and instantiate the greatest moment of political and economic disruption seen in Argentina since the crisis of 2001. He shows how a multinational company taken to court allowed Buenos Aires's residents to craft particular ideas of what it meant to be political, and what it meant become "post-political"-to subsume, neutralize and pathologize genuine disagreement, shaping how we understand what we can even disagree about and how"--

This book is a selection of papers from a conference which took place at the University of Keele in July 1982. The conference was an extraordinarily enjoyable one, and we would like to take this opportunity of thanking all participants for helping to make it so. The conference was intended to allow scholars working on different aspects of symbolic behaviour to compare findings, to look for common ground, and to identify differences between the various areas. We hope that it was successful in these aims: the assiduous reader may judge for himself. Several themes emerged during the course of the conference. Some of these were: 1. There is a distinction to be made between those symbol systems which attempt, more or less directly, to represent a state of affairs in the world (e. g. language, drawing, map and navigational skill) and those in which the representational function is complemented, if not overshadowed, by properties of the symbol system itself, and the systematic inter-relations that symbols can have to one another (e. g. music, mathematics). The distinction is not absolute, for the nature of all symbolic skills is, in part, a function of the structure of the symbolic system employed. Nonetheless, this distinction helps us to understand some common acquisition difficulties, such as that experienced in mathematics, where mental manipulation of symbols can go awry if a child assumes too close a correspondence between mathematical symbols and the world they represent. 2.

On May 19, 2010, the Royal Thai Army deployed tanks, snipers, and war weapons to disperse the thousands of Red Shirts protesters who had taken over the commercial center of Bangkok to demand democratic elections and an end to inequality. Key to this mobilization were motorcycle taxi drivers, who slowed down, filtered, and severed mobility in the area, claiming a prominent role in national politics and ownership over the city and challenging state hegemony. Four years later, on May 20, 2014, the same army general who directed the dispersal staged a military coup, unopposed by protesters. How could state power have been so fragile and open to challenge in 2010 and yet so seemingly sturdy only four years later? How could protesters who had once fearlessly resisted military attacks now remain silent? Owners of the Map provides answers to these questions—central to contemporary political mobilizations around the globe—through an ethnographic study of motorcycle taxi drivers in Bangkok. Claudio Sopranzetti explores the unresolved tensions in the drivers’ everyday lives, their migration trajectories, consumer desires, and political demands amidst the restructuring of Thai capitalism after the 1997 economic crisis. Reconstructing the entanglements between their everyday mobility and political mobilization, Sopranzetti reveals mobility not just as a strength of contemporary capitalism but also as one of its fragile spots, always prone to disruption by the people who sustain its channels but remain excluded from their benefits.
