Registrum Orielense, Vol. 1

Book Description

Excerpt from Registrum Orielense, Vol. 1: An Account of the Members of Oriel College, Oxford; The Commensales, Commoners and Batellers, Admitted During the Years 1500-1700 College, this danger passed away, and the Fellowships at Oriel remained open to the whole University, without restriction or preference to its own members. It is to a great extent to this accident that the College owes the eminence which it attained in the present century. AS regards, however, the other classes into which the extraneous members of Colleges fall, the condition of Oriel resembles its neighbours and the present volume is intended to collect the names of the members of all these classes, or in other words, the names of all the persons entered on the College books between the years 1500 and 1700, omitting those only who were elected to Fellowships direct from elsewhere. It is hoped that in another volume the names of all the members of the Foundation will be published, with a fuller account of each than has been admitted into the plan of the present Register. Fellows are only noticed here, if they were admitted to the College previously to their election; and in their case, no particulars are given of a later date than that election.
