Rembrandt Van Rijn (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Rembrandt Van Rijn IN order to reduce the volume on Rembrandt, published in 1899, to the smaller dimensions demanded by the Great Masters series, it became necessary to dispense with some of the material included in it. This, it is hoped, has been done without seriously affecting the usefulness of the book. The story of the painter's life and work has been to some extent compressed, but everything essential has, it is believed, been retained. The chief omissions are the short descriptions of the pictures and the lists of the etchings, which, while occupying much space, were thought to be more suit able to a work of reference than to a handbook. The student who desires fuller information on these points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Etchings of Rembrandt (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Etchings of Rembrandt The systematic study of the works of a great etcher is seldom undertaken by lovers of art who are not led to it by the requirements of a critic or a collector, and yet this systematic study, though it may seem tedious to the amateur, and pedantic to the-artist, and though it may be regarded with the most complete indifference by the public generally, has its own rewards to offer in the additional clearness which it imparts to the whole subject, and in the enhanced interest that every separate etching gains from being known in connection with the rest. This kind of study would be impossible for us without the help of the minutely detailed information that the zealous industry of catalogue makers has accumulated for our use. We are, indeed, infinitely their debtors, for without their labours of love, extending, in some cases, over many years, and rewarded only by the appreciation of the few who know all that such toil involves, the student could never gain a comprehensive View of the total production of a great artist. Even if he had access to a complete collection, it would be impossible for him to know that it was complete. Rembrandt

Book Description

Excerpt from Rembrandt: A Romance of Holland Peter, said Rembrandt, stand there just where you are. Never mind about the boat for a while. I want to make a sketch of you in this brilliant light. The surprised bargeman thought his passenger was demented. Why in the world should anyone want to paint his homely features! Nevertheless he did as he was bid, and stood there, rope in hand, until the artist, with a few swift, sure touches, completed the sketch. Rembrandt, the Jews and the Bible (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Rembrandt, the Jews and the Bible These considerations influenced me to prepare the following pages, which do not present the whole of Rembrandt, but merely that phase of his life and work which has bearing upon his relation to the Jews and to their Holy Scriptures. This phase, however, should prove the more deeply satisfying to us, because it lay not upon the periphery of his personality, but at its very core. For this reason I offer the present work to the consideration of those who. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rembrandt

Book Description

Excerpt from Rembrandt: His Life, His Work, and His Time I had better point out at once such changes as it has been thought desirable to make in placing before the English-reading public Monsieur Michel's comprehensive book on that pictorial artist whom all schools of criticism unite to honour. Those changes will be found to consist almost entirely in that which concerns the illustration, for in regard to the literary work the Editor's duty to the public and to the writer was mainly to present Monsieur Michel's substance and style in the best English at the command of a translator of taste, and the English of Miss Simmonds has surely done as little violence as possible to the French of the Frenchman. In aiming to be correct, Miss Simmonds has not lost sight of the necessity of being readable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rembrandt, His Life, His Work, and His Time, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Rembrandt, His Life, His Work, and His Time, Vol. 1 of 2 The difficulties of reproduction were, of course, infinitely greater with the pictures. Photography is not well adapted to the rendering of those brown and golden tones which predominate in Rembrandt's works. It was necessary to choose proofs combining clearness in the shadows with exactness in the suggestion of values. Some of the examples were borrowed from the collection of Messrs. Braun and Co. Mr. Hanfstaengl of Munich also allowed the free use of all his Rembrandt reproductions. I am indebted to Mr. Baer of Rotterdam for the fragment of the Paeifieatioa of Holland, the grisaille of the Boymans Museum, and to Mr. Hoffmann, Director of the Darmstadt Museum, for a photograph of the Flagellation in his gallery, which is now published for the first time. The courtesy of Lord Warwick, of Count Orloff Davidoff, and of Messrs. Ed. Andre, Haro, and R. Kann, has further enabled me to reproduce other pictures never before published. Finally M. Sedelmeyer, to whom I here make most grateful acknowledgment, furnished me with photographs of several among the numerous works of Rembrandt which have been in his possession from time to time.
