Excerpt from Report of the Commissioner of Agriculture of the State of Florida, for Period Beginning January 1, 1889 and Ending December 31, 1890 To report with aceurracy the actual results of correspondence and the use of the printed matter sent out by the Bureau in se curing the actual settlement oi immigrants. W0uld be manifestly impossible. Besides the settlers reported by Mr. Gore. Special agent, as having come to Florida as the direct resultof his work in the Northwest (see his report). And those mentiorled in the report of the Chief Clerk, the Bureau is unable tom-ace more than forty additional perons or heads of families who have actually reached and settled in Florida in consequence of its operations. No provision has been made by the State (or col leeting the statistic ofincoming population from yar to var, and the only means by which the Bureau could ascertain which of the many hundreds of its correspondents who have declared their intention of coming to Florida have actually'settled in the State. Is by their having communicated with the Bureau since their arrival. As very few even of these who are known to have probably removed to Florida have done this, the number 0! Those who are now in the State asthe result of the operations ofthe Bureau, but who have not reptxted theirarrwal, moot possibly be specified.
