Ideas come from unexpected moments of inactivity. The pandemic created lots of free time to ponder and wonder, and often the mind was plagued with thoughts. The inspiration came from Facebook’s caption page, “What’s on your mind?.” Initially, it started as simple quotes, a few “likes” and comments, but grew into “Quarantine Reflections.” The editing and photography for the book was done by my son, Jordan who had just finished a study abroad program at Osaka University, Japan, and graduated with a B.A. from University of California, Riverside. It was a great way of inculcating the values of engagement, resilience, and vision. The pandemic has brought the toughest challenge in a generation, but has also brought the greatest stories of heroism, resiliency, camaraderie, and human dependency. In June 2019, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls released its Final Report titled Reclaiming Power and Place. The report documented 231 “ Calls for Justice” demanding immediate action against racialized, sexualized and gender-based violence. The report condemned Canadian society for its inaction and described the violence as “ a national tragedy of epic proportion.” It has been eight years since the release of Forever Loved: Exposing the Hidden Crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada (2016) and four years since the release of Reclaiming Power and Place and we continue to witness racialized, sexualized and gender-based violences across Turtle Island. This book contributes to these Calls for Justice by demanding accountability and policy change. Time and the Brain

Since the days of Galileo, time has been a fundamental variable in scientific attempts to understand the natural world. Once the first recordings of electrical activity in the brain had been made, it became clear that electrical signals from the brain consist of very complex temporal patterns. This can now be demonstrated by recordings at the single unit level and by electroencephalography (EEG). Time and the Brain explores modern approaches to these temporal aspects of electrical brain activity. The temporal structure as revealed from trains of impulses from single nerve cells and from EEG recordings are discussed in depth together with an exploration of correlations with behaviour and psychology. The single cell and EEG approaches often tend to be segregated as the research occurs in laboratories in different parts of the world. By bringing together modern information acquired using both methods it is hoped that they can become better integrated as complimentary windows on the information processing achieved by the brain.
