With the admittance in 1948 of Silas Hunt to the University of Arkansas Law School, the university became the first southern public institution of higher education to officially desegregate without being required to do so by court order. The process was difficult, but an important first step had been taken. Other students would follow in Silas Hunt's footsteps, and they along with the university would have to grapple with the situation. Remembrances in Black is an oral history that gathers the personal stories of African Americans who worked as faculty and staff and of students who studied at the state's flagship institution. These stories illustrate the anguish, struggle, and triumph of individuals who had their lives indelibly marked by their experiences at the school. Organized chronologically over sixty years, this book illustrates how people of color navigated both the evolving campus environment and that of the city of Fayetteville in their attempt to fulfill personal aspirations. Their stories demonstrate that the process of desegregation proved painfully slow to those who chose to challenge the forces of exclusion. Also, the remembrances question the extent to which desegregation has been fully realized.

W. Brown, was abducted from his jail cell by a mob, and then beaten, stabbed, and shot to death. An investigation produced thirty-one suspects, most of them cabbies seeking revenge for one of their own. The police and FBI obtained twenty-six confessions, but, after a nine-day trial in May that attracted national press attention, the defendants were acquitted by an all-white jury. In They Stole Him Out of Jail, William B. Gravely presents the most comprehensive account of the Earle lynching ever written, exploring it from background to aftermath and from multiple perspectives. Rowland Robinson (1719-1806), son of Governor William Robinson, came to Narragansett from England. He married Anstis Gardiner in 1741. Ancestry is traced to Rowland Robinson who was born in Cumberland, England in 1654 and came to America in 1675. He married Mary Allen (1656-1706) and later died in 1716 in South Kingston, Rhode Island. The Hazards are traced to Duke de Charante, ca. 1060, living on the borders of Switzerland. The Hazards of Rhode Island are traced to Thomas Hassard who settled in Rhode Island, ca. 1639. Descendants lived in Vermont, Rhode Island, South Carolina, New York, and elsewhere. James Sweet, son of Isaac and Mary, came to America from Wales in 1630 and settled in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. He married Mary Green.
