Run Anyway

Book Description

In 2012, Lance Svendsen, a 27 year old youth pastor, finds himself on an amazing running journey. Originally motivated by the death of his uncle, it begins when the NYC Marathon is cancelled and a group of friends decide they are going to finish what they had trained to do. They complete the marathon without water stations, medals, fanfare, or even a designated course. Lance's journey continues when he is entered into the Boston Marathon just a few months later, which ended with him witnessing the terrorist bombing at the finish line. What follows is a 50 mile ultra-marathon, and then a most rewarding trip into the mountains of Guatemala, where Lance finds himself carrying out sick children from a place where there was only one way to reach them - on foot. Run Anyway tells the refreshingly funny and inspirational story of a group of friends who knew they had to finish what they started.

Hidden History of Arlington County

Book Description

For over two centuries, Arlington County has been a steadfast center for government institutions and a vibrant part of the Washington, D.C., community. Many notable figures made their home in the area, like Supreme Court chief justice Warren Burger, General George Blood 'n' Guts Patton and a beauty queen who almost married crooner Dean Martin. The drama of Virginia's first school integration unfolded in Arlington beginning in the late 1950s. In the 1960s, two motorcycle gangs clashed in public at a suburban shopping center. Local author, historian and Our Man in Arlington Charlie Clark uncovers the vivid, and hidden, history of a capital community.

Historical Dictionary of Baseball

Book Description

Dating back to 1869 as an organized professional sport, the game of baseball is not only the oldest professional sport in North America, but also symbolizes much more. Walt Whitman described it as “our game, the American game,” and George Will compared calling baseball “just a game” to the Grand Canyon being “just a hole.” Countless others have called baseball “the most elegant game,” and to those who have played it, it’s life. The Historical Dictionary of Baseball is primarily devoted to the major leagues it also includes entries on the minor leagues, the Negro Leagues, women’s baseball, baseball in various other countries, and other non-major league related topics. It traces baseball, in general, and these topics individually, from their beginnings up to the present. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 900 cross-referenced entries on the roles of the players on the field—batters, pitchers, fielders—as well as non-playing personnel—general managers, managers, coaches, and umpires. There are also entries for individual teams and leagues, stadiums and ballparks, the role of the draft and reserve clause, and baseball’s rules, and statistical categories. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the sport of baseball.
