Friendship Village Love Stories contains charming romantic accounts of the citizens of a village called Friendship. It's a place where no one is sick or poor, and the women look after each other and have a strong bond. The narrator has come to Friendship village to escape an unhappy relationship and is interested in the lives of the village residents, including Calliope Marsh, Mame Bliss, Mame Wallace, Amanda Toplady, and others. The people of the village use a folksy dialect that is entertaining and gives a unique touch to the stories. Zona Gale established herself as a realistic narrator of Midwestern village life when she started publishing a series of local-color stories set in Friendship Village. The inspiration for this incredible place came from her hometown of Portage, Wisconsin. This work gives the readers a glimpse of an early 20th-century midwestern village.

With the character of the doctor as her subject, Tabitha Sparks follows the decline of the marriage plot in the Victorian novel. As Victorians came to terms with the scientific revolution in medicine of the mid-to-late nineteenth century, the novel's progressive distance from the conventions of the marriage plot can be indexed through a rising identification of the doctor with scientific empiricism. A narrative's stance towards scientific reason, Sparks argues, is revealed by the fictional doctor's relationship to the marriage plot. Thus, novels that feature romantic doctors almost invariably deny the authority of empiricism, as is the case in George MacDonald's Adela Cathcart. In contrast, works such as Wilkie Collins's Heart and Science, which highlight clinically minded or even sinister doctors, uphold the determining logic of science and, in turn, threaten the novel's romantic plot. By focusing on the figure of the doctor rather than on a scientific theme or medical field, Sparks emulates the Victorian novel's personalization of tropes and belief systems, using the realism associated with the doctor to chart the sustainability of the Victorian novel's central imaginative structure, the marriage plot. As the doctors Sparks examines increasingly stand in for the encroachment of empirical knowledge on a morally formulated artistic genre, their alienation from the marriage plot and its interrelated decline succinctly herald the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of Modernism.

Coming from a small town in North Dakota, Thompson began his love affair with photojournalism as the picture-page editor at the Milwaukee Journal. He joined Life in 1937 and stayed there - except for a few years in the military during World War II - for thirty years. After his retirement, and at the behest of S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, he founded Smithsonian magazine and was its publisher and editor for ten years. Because Thompson's career of five decades coincided with cataclysmic historical events, he guided some of the most fascinating journalistic projects of his day: Life followed NASA's astronauts and their wives through each training and flight until they landed on the moon; serializations led to personal encounters with Harry S. Truman, Douglas MacArthur, Ernest Hemingway, and Winston Churchill. Through Thompson's years, Life and Smithsonian drew the best and the brightest staff from all over the world. Thompson describes his working relationships with several of this century's most famous photographers and writers, among them Alfred Eisenstaedt, W. Eugene Smith, Margaret Bourke-White, Theodore H. White, and Robert Capa. He also describes his relationships with Time Inc. editor-in-chief Henry Luce and his wife, Clare Boothe Luce.

Fans of the traditional Regency Romances of Georgette Heyer, Barbara Metzger, and Jo Beverley will enjoy this witty, entertaining romance from New York Times bestselling author Candice Hern. Meg Ashburton's single London Season had been a disaster. Skinny, red-haired, and 6-feet tall, she had been overlooked as an insignificant gawky bumpkin by all of Society, especially by the gentlemen. Except for one man. Lord Sedgewick had danced with her, and she had secretly fallen in love with him. Now, six years later, a carriage accident near Meg's country home finds a seriously-injured Sedge thinking he's dead, with a red-haired angel bending over him. Meg does her best to insure that the only man she's ever loved doesn't die while under her family's care. As he recovers, she has a second chance at love with him. But when he finally makes her an offer, it is not the sort that Meg can accept. Or can she? From a famous stud farm in the Suffolk countryside to the ballrooms of London, Regency England comes alive in this charming romance."Ms. Hern exquisitely develops her appealing love story with richly textured characterizations and impeccable craftsmanship."--Romantic Times

A celebration of the extraordinary courage, dedication, and sacrifice of this generation of American veterans on the battlefield and their equally valuable contributions on the home front. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and National Book Award nominee Rajiv Chandrasekaran honor acts of uncommon valor in Iraq and Afghanistan, including an army sergeant who runs into a hail of gunfire to protect his comrades; two marines who chose to stand and defend their outpost from an oncoming truck bomb; and a sixty-year-old doctor who joined the navy after his son was killed at war, saving dozens of lives during his service. We also see how veterans turn their leadership skills into community-building initiatives once they return home: former soldiers who aid residents in rebuilding after natural disasters; an infantry officer who trades in a Pentagon job to teach in an inner-city neighborhood; the spouse of a severely injured soldier assisting families in similar positions. These powerful, unforgettable stories demonstrate just how indebted we are to those who protect us and what they have to offer our nation when their military service is over.
