Rural youth and employment in Ethiopia

This paper examines labor diversification in Ethiopia, focusing on youth, and explores current conditions that youth face in both the agricultural and non-farm labor markets. Using data from the Ethiopia Socioeconomic Survey (ESS) and the National Labor Force Survey (NLFS), we explore current trends in labor diversification, along with youth non-farm engagement in rural and small towns. We find that youth (ages 25 to 34 years) have a greater probability of working in non-farm enterprises compared to mature individuals (age 35-64). However, wage labor opportunities remain scant in rural Ethiopia. The majority of individuals working in non-farm employment are engaged in small-scale trade activities.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, Ethiopian Civil Service University (individual), course: thesis, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study was an assessment on the challenges and prospects of rural youth economic empowerment in Dire Teyara Woreda in Harari Regional state of Ethiopia. Standing from this objective, the study was attempted to answer the basic questions of What are the current practices of rural youth economic empowerment?, What are the challenges in implementing rural youth economic development package?, What are the prospects of rural youth economic empowerment?, How can the challenges be addressed and appropriately to use prospects to empower youth economy in the study area? The study was conducted using descriptive study design. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods engaged. Quantitative data was collected from 80 beneficiary youth organized under job opportunity creation program and qualitative data was collected by interview with 10 respondents which of expert of Job Opportunity and Food Security Agency, woreda leader and managers in six Kebelles and 3 field observations was conducted. After data was collected then edited, coded and enter in to SPPS computer software and micro soft Excel as instruments of data entry and data interpreting. The analysis was done using descriptive statistics tool (like frequency, tables, percentage), data was presented by using graphs and summarizing. The major findings are: most of the respondents’ gender was males those are the age category of 26-29 years and most of them are single with high school education background. The challenges in implementing rural youth economic development package particularly in job creation opportunity program challenged by Limited knowledge and skill in leaders and experts, Inadequate Stakeholder integration, Lack of monitoring and evaluating practice to implement youth package, Insufficient credit services for youth and Lack of local community support. the prospect of rural youth economic empowerment were long and short term plan. The major Strategies to improve rural youth economic empowerment were the government should be strongly introducing youth policies, highly monitoring and evaluation in implementing youth development package, good education and training that focus to improve rural youth economic empowerment and improve credit service. Finally, the researcher has recommended that participation and coordination of all concerned bodies and stakeholders are very important in supporting to empower rural youth economically.

The effect of land inheritance on youth employment and migration decisions: Evidence from rural Ethiopia


Book Description

How does the amount of land youth expect to inherit affect their migration and employment decisions? This paper explores this question in the context of rural Ethiopia using panel data from 2010 and 2014. We estimate a household fixed-effects model and exploit exogenous variation in the timing of land redistributions to overcome endogenous household decisions about how much land to bequeath to descendants. We find that larger expected land inheritances significantly lower the likelihood of long-distance permanent migration and of permanent migration to urban areas during this time. Inheriting more land is also associated with a significantly higher likelihood of employment in agriculture and a lower likelihood of employment in the nonagricultural sector. Conversely, the decision to attend school is unaffected. These results appear to be most heavily driven by males and by the older half of our youth sample. We also find several mediating factors matter. Land inheritance plays a much more pronounced role in predicting rural-to-urban permanent migration and nonagricultural-sector employment in areas with less vibrant land markets and in relatively remote areas (those far from major urban centers). Overall, the results suggest that inheritance strongly influences the spatial location and strategic employment decisions of youth.

Livelihood Options of Rural Youth in Ethiopi

Youth, defined either in age grouping and/or with social construction, constitute a large proportion of the population in Developing countries. Almost 28 percent of the population in Ethiopia is youth. The rural ones are the majority compared with their urban counterparts. Ethiopia Employment and Jobs Study

As many developing countries around the world, Ethiopia is faced with the challenge of generating employment for a rapidly-growing and youthful population. Ethiopia's working age population, currently estimated at 54.7 million, is projected to grow by two million per year over the coming decade and this growth is unlikely to slow any time soon given persistently high fertility rates. The fast-growing labor force, combined with improving education levels, the drive for industrialization, and the increased scarcity of agricultural land, will have far-reaching consequences for the social and economic structure of the country, the nature of work, and labor mobility and the growth of town and cities. This jobs and employment study focus on employment dynamics in Ethiopia between 1999 and 2016. Using data from a variety of sources, mainly the labor force surveys (1999, 2005, and 2013) and the Ethiopia socioeconomic surveys (2012, 2014, and 2016), the report looks at what workers in Ethiopia are doing, how employment has changed over the past fifteen years, and how inter- and intra-sectoral employment dynamics have been associated with productivity and economic growth. The report also aims to identify which groups have been doing well on the employment front and which groups are lagging. To add context and depth, the quantitative analysis has been complemented by a qualitative research study on rural youth employment, conducted in April and May 2017 in 16 woredas in the four most populous regions of Ethiopia.
