Scentwork: Step by Step

Book Description

Do you find that you can't tire your dog out, no matter how long or far you walk them? Are you concerned that your dog is getting bored? Have you been looking for different things to do with your dog? How would you feel if your dog could settle even if they hadn't been out for a walk? Would you like to build an even stronger bond with your dog? Scentwork could be the answer that you are looking for! It's an interactive activity that will enhance your relationship with your dog, whilst also helping them to harness their natural scenting abilities. It's a great game that can be played anywhere and everywhere that you go with your dog. I've been training scentwork since 2017, as I needed to find a new activity for a dog that had to retire early from agility. I progressed to becoming a judge and trial manager for Scentwork UK, as well as running Nosework Games events. I've continued to expand my understanding and skills, and have been passing this learning on to others. Following the steps laid out in this book will set you on a journey of a lifetime with your dog. You'll learn how to teach them to search on cue (and when to stop), as well as teach them a 'target odour' to search for. You'll start to look at the world in a different way, as you see objects and places that would be great for searching. The exercises are simple enough that anybody can follow them, meaning you don't need any previous training experience to benefit from them. Even if you already have some experience, you will be inspired to get back to basics and have fun with your dog. This training is suitable for all ages, breeds and abilities. I've kept it simple, so that nobody will get overwhelmed with trying to understand complicated terms and processes. So what are you waiting for? Grab a copy, and get ready to change your dog's life!

Book Description

Scentwork for Horses is the first practical guide on how to implement scentwork into the lives of domesticated horses, enhancing behaviour, welfare, and the human-animal bond. Scentwork is a new discipline in the field for horse and handler, and expert author Rachaël Draaisma arms the reader with a palette of information to enable them to put this technique into action. As well as theoretical background information on the nose of the horse and biomechanics, Draaisma discusses how scentwork improves horses’ learning abilities, development, socialisation, and their bond with the handler. Readers will learn how to have their horses explore their environment, participate in scentwork games and follow a footstep track to find a missing person or food bag. Easily accessible for anybody working with horses at any level, scentwork can be done in small areas as well as in larger spaces on various surfaces. Whether veterinarian, behaviourist, trainer, animal-assisted therapist, equine physiotherapist, osteopath, or interested horse owner, this book promises to bring both you and the horse enormous benefits, strengthening the human-animal bond. Rachaël Draaisma has always lived with and had a passion for dogs and horses. In 2002, she decided to make it her profession. Achieving several diplomas, she started to work full time as a trainer and behavioural consultant, first with dogs, later with horses. Her best-selling book Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses, published by CRC Press in 2017, has been translated into several languages. Another pillar of Draaisma’s working life with horses revolves around equine mental stimulation and scentwork, and she has developed an extensive method to undertake scent tracking with horses, a new tool in enriching the human-equine relationship. Draaisma travels throughout Europe and the globe to provide workshops and lectures on calming signals of horses, equine mental stimulation, and scentwork. Detector Dogs and Scent Movement

Book Description

Dogs detect scent from a source that is carried to them in a plume by the wind. The most important tool for a detector dog handler to have on searches is a knowledge of scent plume movement or "scent dynamics" (the science of scent movement). Such knowledge resides primarily in scientific journals that are largely inaccessible to detector dog handlers and written in language that is difficult to understand. Detector Dogs and the Science of Scent Movement: A Handler’s Guide to Environments and Procedures retrieves, reviews, and interprets the results of pertinent scientific research on scent dynamics and presents these results in terms that are easier for handlers to understand. Information on the physiology of the dog’s nose, their sense of smell, and the properties of scent provide the essential information on the process of scenting. The composition of training aids for explosives, narcotics, human remains and other sources is discussed. Recommendations are made on the use of training aids, their placement during training, and the resulting availability of scent. Potential problems and handler errors in the use of training aids are also examined. The characteristics of scent plumes and how wind influences their movement are a key focus of the book. The primary task for the handler is to get the dog into the scent plume so that the dog can detect the scent and follow it to the source the handler seeks. As such, a knowledge of scent and scent plume movement will vastly improve the ability of the handler to accomplish this task. The influence of weather and physical settings such as terrain, vegetation, ground cover, soil and water on scent movement are examined in detail. Strategies for searching, detecting, and locating sources in all physical settings are presented. Specific effects associated with hills and mountains, fields and forests, bare soils and soils covered by vegetation, different soil types, and lakes and rivers are examined in detail. This includes specific recommendations are made about weather and physical settings that result in higher probability of success on searches. Detector Dogs and the Science of Scent Movement will be a vital resource for K9 handles in the private and public sectors—including in Homeland Security, law enforcement, and military settings—as well as a useful guide for lawyers, forensic, and investigative professionals who need to better understand K9 operations.
