The Vampire in Science Fiction Film and Literature

Book Description

Vampires have been a popular subject for writers since their inception in 19th century Gothic literature and, later, became popular with filmmakers. Now the classical vampire is extinct, and in its place are new vampires who embrace the hi-tech worlds of science fiction. This book is the first to examine the history of vampires in science fiction. The first part considers the role of science and pseudo-science, from late Victorian to modern times, in the creation of the vampire, as well as the "sensation fiction" of J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Bram Stoker, Arthur Conan Doyle and H.G. Wells. The second part focuses on the history of the science fiction vampire in the cinema, from the silent era to the present. More than sixty films are discussed, including films from such acclaimed directors as Roger Corman, David Cronenberg, Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg, among others.

Science Fiction, Imperialism and the Third World

Book Description

Though science fiction is often thought of as a Western phenomenon, the genre has long had a foothold in countries as diverse as India and Mexico. These fourteen critical essays examine both the role of science fiction in the third world and the role of the third world in science fiction. Topics covered include science fiction in Bengal, the genre's portrayal of Native Americans, Mexican cyberpunk fiction, and the undercurrents of colonialism and Empire in traditional science fiction. The intersections of science fiction theory and postcolonial theory are explored, as well as science fiction's contesting of imperialism and how the third world uses the genre to recreate itself. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Within these extra-terrestrial settings, human minds are pitted against superior intellects from other worlds and other galaxies. The supernatural stories are also other-worldly, but this time more contemplative, spiritual and mystical. The pace is slower, the atmosphere more eerie, more contemplative. The narratives are both thought-provoking and mysterious. They draw the reader into worlds slightly off-kilter, slightly less certain and definitely enigmatic. All the narratives are highly readable: some are adventurous, some enchanting, some cryptic, some inexplicable, but all are hugely thrilling and entertaining.
