Scottish Fire

Book Description

The fiddle has been popular in Scotland for over 500 years as an accompanying instrument for dance and song. Bonnie Rideout has been playing traditional Scottish fiddle music since the 1980s. This collection presents favorite tunes which Bonnie had stashed away over the years while awaiting the perfect opportunity to record them. the music written here ranges from J. Scott Skinner's Dr. Gordon Stable (a wonderful fiery reel she once played to garner her first national fiddling title as a young teenager), to Fear A Bhata (a heartbreaking air she has known as long as she can remember). These Scottish fiddle selections have been carefully transcribed from Bonnie's recording Scottish Fire. It would be impossible to write down all her bowings and every grace note, especially since they are not always consistent from one playing to the next. Readers should use this book as a basis for exploring their own voice within the music.

Fire and Rescue Services

Book Description

This unique text fills a major gap in the emergency services literature by surveying the research on fire and rescue service management in the UK. An extensive evidence base focuses on organizational culture, leadership skills, standards, and accountability, emphasizing the services’ dual roles as first responders and guardians of public safety and prevention. The implications for international public health and safety programs are made clear as the services’ recent history illustrates the complex challenges typical of functioning within local and national political contexts. Chapters take on a broad range of management, leadership, service delivery, and staffing concerns, including: · Evolution and adaptation of fire and rescue services during periods of expansion and austerity. · Civil protection as a local and national priority. · Structural issues: assessments and improvements, collaborations with other services. · Emerging social concerns: diversity, gender equality, the aging worker population. · The concepts and consequences of heroes and heroism. · Future directions for governance, transparency, and accountability. Fire and Rescue Services complements the earlier volumes in the Leadership & Management of Emergency Services series with equal parts realism and vision. It should interest a wide audience of public policymakers, public managers, and emergency service personnel, as well as academics and researchers.

The Scottish Office

Book Description

Originally published in 1957, this book gives a comprehensive account of the scope and variety of the work previously performed by Scottish Government departments in Whitehall during the second half of the 20th Century. The then Secretary of State for Scotland’s role was unusually diverse – he or she was the equivalent to a number of English ministers. The book examines this complex role and then analyses the work and organisation of 4 main departments: Agriculture, Education, Health and Home. The approach is a broad one, with an explanation given of how and why Scottish arrangements and practices differ from those south of the border.

Critical Perspectives on the Management and Organization of Emergency Services

Book Description

Critical Perspectives on the Management and Organization of Emergency Services makes an important contribution to the subject of emergency services management and to public administration and organization studies more generally. It critically assesses developments in emergency services management by examining the multi-dimensional nature of the provision of emergency services and their connectedness in advanced western democracies. The effective management of emergency services has never been more important than in today’s high-pressured and cost-conscious public sector. The authors of this volume forensically analyse the challenges of delivering emergency services within this context. This book provides an in-depth, scholarly and comprehensive analysis of the changing landscape of emergency service provision and clearly addresses a gap in the market for a critical volume on the emergency services. For anyone seeking to understand why and how the management of emergency services matters, this collection is essential reading.
