Tennyson and in Memoriam an Appreciation and a Study (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Tennyson and in Memoriam an Appreciation and a Study That is not the figure which Tennyson pre sents on his first appearance in the arena where he was to outstrip all rivals. His Keepsahe period lasted long. Looking back, we can indeed discern in the volume of 1842 - in the Ulysses, in the Morte d'arthur, in The Two Voices - the promise of nearly all that was to come. But these were imbedded in much that was pretty but petty, Wordsworthian idylls too long drawn out, Lords of Burleigh and Ladies Clare, that half justified the early scofi'ers, Wilson and the rest. Even the melody, though sweet and clear, was thin and at times tinkling. Grace, not force or dignity, was the character istic up to and including The Princess of 1847, the most graceful poem of such length in the language. The Rape of the loch, the only other poem in English literature that can be compared with it, is more witty than graceful. Tennyson Remembrance Book

Book Description

Excerpt from Tennyson Remembrance Book: A Memorial for the Poet's Reader Friends Judged by conventional standards in these days of hurry, the life of Alfred Tennyson would seem to have been singularly unevent ful He was born in the flat Lincolnshire country of England, in the rectory of Somersby, on the sixth Of August, 1809, one year after Longfellow, two years after Whittier was born in 1807. His boyhood was passed at home, his education being almost entirely conducted by his father, a cultivated English clergyman. Apart from his home training he had four years at the grammar school of Louth and the regular university course at Cambridge. The rectory children were a baker's dozen, happy, precocious, and most Of them story writers or poetizers at an early age.
