Shakespeare's Sonnets

Shakespeare's Sonnets (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

This 1865 edition was first printed in 1609 in London. Now, centuries after the Bard of Avon's death, his works remain popular, sought after, and worth republishing. This collection of sonnets is no different. This edition puts Shakespeare's fine 14-line poems in the spotlight, as it is devoid of any foreword, introduction, or any other type of writing but the sonnets. It includes all but one image - which is placed at the beginning of the book. In the absence of sonnet titles, the publishers did not make use of a table of contents. An index of first lines is provided instead, making it easier for the ardent Shakespeare fan to locate a particular sonnet out of the 154 included in the collection. It is delightful to discover that each page contains only a single sonnet, which facilitates clarity and ease of reading, aside from a satisfyingly "uncluttered" look. Reading the sonnets, one cannot but help sighing with delight at the beautiful rhymes and lines. The choice of words, combined with the fact that they do sound well with each other, makes lovers of the written word sigh with utter delight and joy. The romance oozing from virtually every line in Shakespeare's sonnets makes one keep reading one poem after the other compulsively. The clever themed grouping of the sonnets adds to the page-turning appeal of this edition. All in all, this is one volume to carry about, read, and re-read, especially when one needs a healthy dose of creative, or romantic, inspiration. The Complete Sonnets and Poems

Book Description

'This Complete Sonnets and Poems is a distinguished addition to a distinguished series. It will repay continuing study, and act as a valuable point of reference for readers concerned more generally with Shakespeare's art and language. Colin Burrow's good sense, tact and balance as aneditor are deeply impressive.' -H. R. Woudhuysen, Times Literary SupplementThis is the only fully annotated and modernized edition to bring together Shakespeare's Sonnets as well as all his poems (including those attributed to him after his death). A full introduction discusses his development as a poet, and how the poems relate to his plays; detailed notes explain the language and allusions in clear modern English. While accessibly written, the edition takes account of the most recent scholarship and criticism.

Shakespeare's Sonnets

Book Description

Excerpt from Shakespeare's Sonnets: Edited, With Notes I have given special attention to Mr. Lee's theories of the Sonnets, partly because he has developed and defended them at such length in his Life of Shakespeare (quite out of proportion to the space allotted to other controverted questions of importance), and partly be cause his book is, in most other respects, so scholarly and authoritative. As in all cases where I disagree with other authors, I have endeavoured to state Mr. Lee's opinions and arguments fairly - generally in his own words - and as fully as the space at my command would permit. The Sonnets of William Shakespeare

Book Description

Excerpt from The Sonnets of William Shakespeare: New Light and Old Evidence Should my grouping of the sonnets seem auda cions, it may be remembered that their first publisher only claimed to give the public a large number of Shakespeare's minor poems, as they reached his hands (probably from three distinct sources). I disclaim, in altering Thorpe's ar rangement, any attempt to alter Shakespeare. In my judgment, every lover and student of these poems has as good a right to change the order in which they are printed as their first pirate publisher, even a better right, if by so doing their interest is enhanced and their meaning clarified. Great Pan Lives; Shakespeare's Sonnets, 20-126

Book Description

Excerpt from Great Pan Lives; Shakespeare's Sonnets, 20-126: With Paraphrase and References In the present work I invite the Reader to a special study of the Evolution of the Ideal observable in Sonnets 20 - 126. To assist perception, the secondary or dumb signification of these sonnets, except when it speaks in effect with more than usual plainness, is paraphrased almost lineally. The references are the basis of the paraphrase. If the Reader will consult them steadily, he will find himself engaged in work of systematic textual comparison, which will afford him literary pleasure and enlightenment and the cumulative interest almost of independent-discovery, and will assure him of the fact that the paraphrase is not an arbitrary composition, but is supported adequately by textual evidence. In further aid, the parallel passages indicated by the references are woven to a consider able extent into the paraphrase. It is essential to a comprehension of the subject that the sonnets contained in this book should be studied in their numerical order. Sonnets 1 - 19, 127 - 154 are omitted. I reserve methodic elucidation of the secondary signification of these sonnets to another time and place. 'references to them in the following pages can be looked up in ordinary editions. A New Study of the Sonnets of Shakespeare (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A New Study of the Sonnets of Shakespeare By this means, the sonnets are lifted from a low level of petty concern, - a cat-and-dog fight, as Butler, a recent commentator, has said, - up to a high point of aesthetic interest and significance.
