Book Description

Shantistan is a cross-culture peacemaking workbook. Its purpose is to encourge the development and use of culture bearers, who are dedicated to promoting peace. Both theoretical and practical applications are provided. Applications of thirteen personal cross-cultural narratives form the Shantistan peace building curriculum. Mediated learning experiences delivered through collaborative dialogues provide opportunities for self-regulated learners to use representational thinking. In order to encourage heritage sustainability, participants gather and replicate their life experience relating to the peace-making themes. (integrity, harmony, tolerance, devotion to one’s beliefs, love, doing good, civility, human dignity, human kindness, faith and forgiveness, protection of life, sacrifice and reconciliation) This flexibility in product and process provides intergeneration participation and facilitates the benefits of peace making.

FRAMEWORKS is a series dedicated to interdisciplinary studies on the integration of faith and learning. Given Jesus' command to "love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength," the time is ripe for confessional scholarship and education across the disciplines. We implore God's Spirit to change us through the great works of history and literature alongside developments in science, psychology, and economics--and all of this--through intense engagement with the Scriptures. We want to celebrate God's work across the disciplines. We seek the likes of psychologists in conversation with philosophers, ethicists with historians, biblical scholars with rhetoricians, scientists with economists, environmentalists with neurologists. As these conversations continue across the disciplines, the "framework" from which to draw our individual and collective testimonies will only enlarge. This volume of essays, dedicated to Stan and Ruth Burgess, has been written by their colleagues and students to honor them as they retire after many years of distinguished service to Evangel University, Southwest Missouri State University, and Regent University. Several meanings can be subsumed under the title Children of the Calling. Stan and Ruth grew up in India, children of Pentecostal missionaries who felt they had "divine callings." They were influenced not only by the religious callings of their parents, but also by the cultural milieu of India. Though they did not personally take on board the specific missionary calling of their parents, they charted life maps that benefitted from the cross-cultural proficiencies developed in their childhoods in India, which to a large extent colored the influence they would have on their children, academic colleagues, and students, some of whom have submitted essays for this Festschrift. The diversity of subjects in this volume attests to the breadth of the scholarly work of Stan and Ruth Burgess. The first section narrates the major highlights of Stan and Ruth's academic biographies, the second presents pioneering studies of biblical studies and church history, and the third offers application-based research and personal reminiscences.
