Although a number of edited collections deal with either the languages of the world or the languages of particular regions or genetic families, only a few cover sign languages or even include a substantial amount of information on them. This handbook provides information on some 38 sign languages, including basic facts about each of the languages, structural aspects, history and culture of the Deaf communities, and history of research. This information will be of interest not just to general audiences, including those who are deaf, but also to linguists and students of linguistics. By providing information on sign languages in a manner accessible to a less specialist audience, this volume fills an important gap in the literature.




Sign Language Brokering in Deaf-Hearing Families


Book Description

This book details a study of sign language brokering that is carried out by deaf and hearing people who grow up using sign language at home with deaf parents, known as heritage signers. Child language brokering (CLB) is a form of interpreting carried out informally by children, typically for migrant families. The study of sign language brokering has been largely absent from the emerging body of CLB literature. The book gives an overview of the international, multi-stage, mixed-method study employing an online survey, semi-structured interviews and visual methods, to explore the lived experiences of deaf parents and heritage signers. It will be of interest to practitioners and academics working with signing deaf communities and those who wish to pursue professional practice with deaf communities, as well as academics and students in the fields of Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Communication, Interpreting Studies and the Social Science of Childhood.

"Much has been written about deaf identities, however, no single book has focused specifically on how different academic disciplines conceptualize deaf identities in one fell swoop. This book, "Deaf Identities: Exploring New Frontiers," does exactly that. It is a unique compilation of multidisciplinary perspectives on the lens of deaf identities written by scholars representing a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, counseling, education, literary criticism, practical religion, philosophy, psychology, sociology, social work, and Deaf Studies.
