This is a proceedings of the 5th Franco-Japanese-Vietnamese Symposium on Singularities held in Kagoshima during 27th October - 3rd November, 2017. The main theme of the symposium was Singularity Theory in a broad sense, including complex and real algebraic varieties, functions and mappings, and topology of singularities. The symposium was based on long-term interaction of singularity theorists in France, Japan, Vietnam and other countries. This volume includes three surveys of recent trends based on the lectures in the mini-school organized in the first two days of the symposium and articles presenting recent progress in Singularity Theory.

This volume arises from the Fifth Franco-Japanese Symposium on Singularities, held in Strasbourg in August 2009. The conference brought together an international group of researchers, mainly from France and Japan, working on singularities in algebraic geometry, analytic geometry and topology. The conference also featured the JSPS Forum on Singularities and Applications, which aimed to introduce some recent applications of singularity theory to physics and statistics. Multiethnic Japan challenges the received view of Japanese society as ethnically homogeneous. Employing a wide array of arguments and evidence--historical and comparative, interviews and observations, high literature and popular culture--John Lie recasts modern Japan as a thoroughly multiethnic society. Lie casts light on a wide range of minority groups in modern Japanese society, including the Ainu, Burakumin (descendants of premodern outcasts), Chinese, Koreans, and Okinawans. Quantum Invariants of Knots and 3-Manifolds

Due to the strong appeal and wide use of this monograph, it is now available in its third revised edition. The monograph gives a systematic treatment of 3-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) based on the work of the author with N. Reshetikhin and O. Viro. This subject was inspired by the discovery of the Jones polynomial of knots and the Witten-Chern-Simons field theory. On the algebraic side, the study of 3-dimensional TQFTs has been influenced by the theory of braided categories and the theory of quantum groups. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a construction of 3-dimensional TQFTs and 2-dimensional modular functors from so-called modular categories. This gives a vast class of knot invariants and 3-manifold invariants as well as a class of linear representations of the mapping class groups of surfaces. This book presents the basic concepts of quantitative soil science and, within this framework, it seeks to construct a new body of knowledge. There is a growing need for quantitative approach in soil science, which arises from a general demand for improved economic production and environmental management. Pedometrics can be defined as the development and application of statistical and mathematical methods applicable to data analysis problems in soil science. This book shows how pedometrics can address key soil-related questions from a quantitative point of view. It addresses four main areas which are akin to the problems of conventional pedology: (i) Understanding the pattern of soil distribution in character space – soil classification, (ii) Understanding soil spatial and temporal variation, (iii) Evaluating the utility and quality of soil and ultimately, (iv) Understanding the genesis of soil.
