Slippy McGee gets wounded and receives help from Father De Rance, a kind priest, who decides to help McGee instead of giving him in the hands of authorities. Inspired by De Rance, McGee starts a new moral life. At this point, the story could get a happy ending, yet unpredicted circumstances step in, putting our protagonist in front of a tough choice.
