Exploring the Slums of Kolkata

Kolkata has long been celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, intellectual fervor, and colonial-era architecture. However, there is much more to the city, including socioeconomic disparities, problem of urban migration, and the struggle for survival The journey embarked upon in this book takes us through the crowded, narrow lanes of slums the slums of Kolkata. We navigate through the daily struggles for access to clean water, education, healthcare, and dignified employment. This book is a sociological study that invites readers to explore the nuances of poverty, the impact of urbanization, and the collective efforts to carve out a dignified existence. The data collection process undertaken to write this book are of two types:- a) Secondary data collection b) Primary data collection The primary data are the data’s which is in original from and is directly collected from the field. The secondary data’s are those data that were already collected someone and which may have passed through some statistical process. The secondary data have been collected mainly from Census of India, National Atlas and thematic Mapping Organization, Kolkata Metropolitan Developmental Authority and Kolkata Municipal Corporation etc. As we navigate the intricacies of life within Kolkata's slums, it is essential to recognize the systemic issues that perpetuate these challenges. From inadequate infrastructure to limited access to education and healthcare, the complexities are deeply rooted in broader societal structures.

This book “Facets of Contemporary History”is a selection of research papers, presented in the International Conference on Contemporary History which was held on 30th and 31st January 2015. This conference was organized by the Department of History, Tourism and Travel Management, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai. It gives us great pleasure to put together a selection of the papers for the public in the form of a book in the interest of research. Contemporary History refers to the history of the immediate past or that which can be expected to remain in living memory. While there are areas of history which have branched off from contemporary history such as social history and economic history this conference took a very broad look at contemporary events from not just a historical but also a social science perspective. This Book contains 6 Sections namely Political History, Socio-Cultural History, Gender, Economic History, Environment and Tourism. Islamization in Modern South Asia


Book Description

This book explores the religious identity of the indigenous Gujjars living in Rajaji National Park (RNP), Uttarakhand, India. In the broader context of forest conservation discourse, steps taken by the local government to relocate the Gujjars outside RNP have been crucial in their choice to associate with NGOs and Deobandi Muslims. These intersecting associations constitute the context of their transitioning religious identity. The book presents a rich account of the actual process of Islamization through the collaborative agency of Deobandi madrasas and Tablighi Jama‘at. Based on documents and interviews collected over four years, it constructs a particular case of Deobandi reform and also balances this with a layered description of the Gujjar responses. It argues that in their association with the Deobandis, the Gujjars internalized the normative dimensions of beliefs and practices but not at the expense of their traditional Hindu-folk culture. This capacity for adaptation bodes well for the Gujjars, but their proper integration with wider society seems assured only in association with the Deobandis. Consequently this research also points toward the role of Islam in integrating marginal groups in the wider context of society in South Asia.

HIV and Young People


Book Description

Revisiting the thinking on vulnerability to HIV and risk of infection, this book provides better understanding by considering the risk of HIV infection alongside notions of personal and collective resilience, dignity and humiliation. The work shows that young people in the urban slum dignify their world and, in doing so, establish priorities and draw on a set of references oftentimes intelligible to them alone. Moreover, humiliation, as an interpersonal event, adds to a sense of vulnerability and lies closely behind choices directly affecting personal health and livelihood. Thus, dignity and humiliation are shown for the first time to have a critical role in health seeking and risky behavior related to HIV, and this is an area in great need of further research. The crucial focus of this work is further emphasized by the rapid growth of urban slums, and high rates of HIV among both slum dwellers and young people, who continue to bear the brunt of the AIDS epidemic, thirty years on. This comprehensive literature review provides a compelling argument that the time is right to further explore the nexus of risk and resilience from a people-centered perspective. Fresh insight is critical to reach the goal of ending AIDS by 2030.
