This is what a Feminist Slut Looks Like; Perspectives on the Slutwalk Movement


Book Description

In April 2011, a team of five people put together SlutWalk Toronto, a protest responding to slut shaming and victim blaming culture, exemplified by a recent event at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. In the name of campus “safety,” Toronto Police Constable Michael Sanguinetti advised “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized.” The sentiment of those in the over 3000 person crowd that day were shared by folks around the globe — leading to over 200 SlutWalks internationally and the establishment of “SlutWalk” organizing groups. This collection engenders a critical engagement with the global phenomenon of the SlutWalk movement, considering both its strengths and limitations. The chapters take up SlutWalk through a feminist lens (broadly defined) considering SlutWalk as a successful social movement, a site of tremendous controversy, and an ongoing discussion among and between waves of feminists across the life cycle and across the globe. Through poetry, photography, scholarly articles, creative non-fiction, personal essays, the collection seeks to unpack the discursive performance of SlutWalk as well as explore the experiences of people who attended various and diverse SlutWalks marches/protests in North America and Asia.

Even before transgender sex worker Sylvia Rivera threw a brick and sparked the Stonewall Riot in 1969, these trailblazing activists and allies challenged criminal sex laws and “whorephobia,” and were active in struggles for gay liberation, women’s rights, reproductive justice, union organizing, and prison abolition. Although the multibillion-dollar international sex industry thrives, the United States remains one of the few industrialized nations that continues to criminalize prostitution, and these discriminatory laws put workers at risk. In response, sex workers have organized to improve their working conditions and to challenge police and structural violence. Through individual confrontations and collective campaigns, they have pushed the boundaries of conventional organizing, called for decriminalization, and have reframed sex workers’ rights as human rights. Justice, Equality, and SlutWalk


Book Description

The international SlutWalk protest phenomena emerged in 2011 in Toronto, Canada as a feminist movement determined to speak out against two key aspects of rape culture: slut-shaming and victim-blaming. SlutWalk protesters simultaneously advocate a sex-positive stance while lashing back at rape culture. This thesis examines SlutWalks as a form of modern protest that utilizes the Internet to create a membership of mostly young people working within third wave feminist theoretical frames. The role of online organizing is examined for its potential for globalization from below, and the limitations of the digital divide are explored. Additionally, the reclamation of "slut" is seen as a key rhetorical move of SlutWalk protesters. The author examines three forms of reclamation present in protest, and examines the potential and limitations of each. It is argued that SlutWalk uses synecdochal framing on two levels that both enable and constrain the protests. Issues of representation are explored as they relate to individuals at various standpoints and intersections with rape culture. It is argued that tensions between resistance and control exist, especially as they relate to individuals most marginalized and oppressed by discourses of rape culture. Overall, the author argues that SlutWalks revive consciousness-raising in the third wave of feminism and work to deconstruct oppressive discourses in society. However, the limitation of SlutWalk to speak for all women, especially women of color, is of serious consideration for imagining feminist futures that build coalitions and work in solidarity with other feminist organizing efforts.

Knowing Victims


Book Description

Knowing Victims explores the theme of victimhood in contemporary feminism and politics. It focuses on popular and scholarly constructions of feminism as ‘victim feminism’ – an ideology of passive victimhood that denies women’s agency – and provides the first comprehensive analysis of the debate about this ideology which has unfolded among feminists since the 1980s. The book critically examines a movement away from the language of victimhood across a wide array of discourses, and the neoliberal replacement of the concept of structural oppression with the concept of personal responsibility. In derogating the notion of ‘victim,’ neoliberalism promotes a conception of victimization as subjective rather than social, a state of mind, rather than a worldly situation. Drawing upon Nietzsche, Lyotard, rape crisis feminism and feminist philosophy, Stringer situates feminist politicizations of rape, interpersonal violence, economic inequality and welfare reform as key sites of resistance to the victim-blaming logic of neoliberalism. She suggests that although recent feminist critiques of ‘victim feminism’ have critically diagnosed the anti-victim movement, they have not positively defended victim politics. Stringer argues that a conception of the victim as an agentic bearer of knowledge, and an understanding of resentment as a generative force for social change, provides a potent counter to the negative construction of victimhood characteristic of the neoliberal era. This accessible and insightful analysis of feminism, neoliberalism and the social construction of victimhood will be of great interest to researchers and students in the disciplines of gender and women’s studies, psychology, sociology, politics and philosophy.




Stripped


Book Description

Stripped examines the ways in which erotic bodies communicate in performance and as cultural figures. Focusing on symbols independent of language, Maggie M. Werner explores the signs and signals of erotic dance, audience responses to these codes, and how this exchange creates embodied rhetoric. Informed by her own ethnographic research conducted in strip clubs and theaters, Werner analyzes the movement, dress, and cosmetic choices of topless dancers and neo-burlesque performers. Drawing on critical methods of analysis, she develops approaches for interpreting embodied erotic rhetoric and the marginal cultural practices that construct women’s public erotic bodies. She follows these bodies out into the streets—into the protest spaces where sex workers and anti-rape activists challenge discourses about morality and victimhood and struggle to remake their own identities. Throughout, Werner showcases the voices of these performers and in the analyses shares her experiences as an audience member, interviewer, and paying customer. The result is a uniquely personal and erudite study that advances conversations about women’s agency and erotic performance, moving beyond the binary that views the erotic body as either oppressed or empowered. Theoretically sophisticated and delightfully intimate, Stripped is an important contribution to the study of the rhetoric of the body and to rhetorical and performance studies more broadly.
