Cognitive functioning is critical as in our daily life a host of real-world complex decisions in high-stakes markets have to be made. The decision-making process can be vulnerable to environmental stressors. Summarizing the growing economic and epidemiologic evidence linking air pollution, cognition performance and real-world decision making, we first illustrate key physiological and psychological pathways between air pollution and cognition. We then document the main patterns of air pollution affecting cognitive test performance by type of cognitive tests, gender, window of exposure, age profile, and educational attainment. We further extend to a review of real-world decision making that has been found to be affected by air pollution and the resulting cognitive impairments. Finally, rich implications on environmental health policies are drawn based on existing evaluations of social costs of air pollution.




Toxic Politics

Environmental degradation in China has not only brought a wider range of diseases and other health consequences than previously understood, it has also taken a heavy toll on Chinese society, the economy, and the legitimacy of the party-state. In Toxic Politics, Yanzhong Huang presents new evidence of China's deepening health crisis and challenges the widespread view that China is winning the war on pollution. Smog in our brains: Gender differences in the impact of exposure to air pollution on cognitive performance in China

While there is a large body of literature on the negative health effects of air pollution, there is much less written about its effects on cognitive performance for the whole population. This paper studies the effects of contemporaneous and cumulative exposure to air pollution on cognitive performance based on a nationally representative survey in China. By merging a longitudinal sample at the individual level with local air-quality data according to the exact dates and counties of interviews, we find that contemporaneous and cumulative exposure to air pollution impedes both verbal and math scores of survey subjects. Interestingly, the negative effect is stronger for men than for women. Specifically, the gender difference is more salient among the old and less educated in both verbal and math tests.




Mutual Interactions Between Decision Making and Environmental Clustering

Human environments exhibit reliable and exploitable patterns of information, and extensive research in cognitive science demonstrates that evolution has selected for human decision strategies that are closely adapted to such environmental structures. Clustering is one such pervasive environmental structure (e.g., physical resources like food and abstract resources like information are clustered both across time and space) and in this dissertation, I explore the influence clustering wields on decision making. Studies 1 and 2 use cognitive modeling of human data to investigate recency (using only a recent set of experiences) as a decision strategy adapted to environmental clustering, and demonstrate that (1) people are relatively good at identifying and adapting their recency strategy to levels that are close to optimal in their clustered environments, and (2) people are generally biased toward a default recency strategy. While these two initial studies establish the influence of clustered environmental structures on decision making, real-world environmental structures are often simultaneously influenced by human decision making. For instance, patchiness of food resources (e.g., fish schools, vegetation patches) both influence the search strategies of predators and may also emerge as a result of these search strategies. Studies 3 and 4 use agent-based modeling to study dynamical mutual interactions between decision making and environmental clustering, demonstrating that they have regulatory influences on each other, producing self-organizing systems.
