The first of two volumes presenting an overview of the important research areas in which Professor H. Überall has done his life's work and constitutes a festschrift for this distinguished physicist. Each chapter is intended to serve as a bridge between advanced textbooks and the most recent research literature, thereby providing a valuable reference for active researchers as well as for graduate students.

This book provides an introductory course on Nuclear and Particle physics for undergraduate and early-graduate students, which the author has taught for several years at the University of Zurich. It contains fundamentals on both nuclear physics and particle physics. Emphasis is given to the discovery and history of developments in the field, and is experimentally/phenomenologically oriented. It contains detailed derivations of formulae such as 2- 3 body phase space, the Weinberg-Salam model, and neutrino scattering. Originally published in German as 'Kern- und Teilchenphysik', several sections have been added to this new English version to cover very modern topics, including updates on neutrinos, the Higgs boson, the top quark and bottom quark physics. - Prové de l'editor.

This Second Edition is aimed at students taking a firstcourse in this subject, although it will also be of interest toprofessional physicists and electronic engineers requiring a graspof the fundamentals of this important area of physics. Basicconcepts are introduced in an easily accessible context: forexample, wave propagation in crystals is introduced using one-andtwo-dimensional geometries. Only when these basic ideas arefamiliar are generalisations to three dimensions and the elegantframework of the reciprocal lattice made. Extensively rewritten, the Second Edition now includes new and expanded coverage ofsemiconductor devices, the quantum Hall effect, quasicrystals, hightemperature superconductors and techniques for the study of thesurfaces of solids. A chapter on dielectrics and ferroelectrics hasalso been added. Solid State Physics, Second Edition features: * A carefully written and structured text to help students fullyunderstand this exciting subject. * A flow diagram allowing topics to be studied in differentorders or omitted altogether. * Optional "starred" and highlighted sections containing moreadvanced and specialised material for the more ambitiousreader. * Carefully selected problems at the end of each chapter designedto assist learning. Solutions are provided at the end of thebook.

Volume 43 of Advances in Solid State Physics contains the written versions of most of the plenary and invited lectures of the Spring Meeting of the Condensed Matter Physics section of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft held from March 24 to 28, 2003 in Dresden, Germany. Many of the topical talks given at the numerous and very lively symposia are also included. They covered an extremely interesting selection of timely subjects. Thus the book truly reflects the status of the field of solid state physics in 2003, and explains its attractiveness, not only in Germany but also internationally.

The 2001 Spring Meeting of the 65th Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft was held together with the 65. Physikertagung, in Hamburg, during the pe riod March 26 30 2001. With more than 3500 conference attendees, a record has again been achieved after several years of stabilisation in participation. This proves the continuing and now even increasing, attraction of solid state physics, especially for young colleagues who often discuss for the first time their scientific results in public at this meeting. More than 2600 scientific pa pers were presented orally, as well as posters, among them about 120 invited lectures from Germany and from abroad. This Volume 41 of "Advances in Solid State Physics" contains the written versions of half of the latter. We nevertheless hope that the book truly reflects the current state of the field. Amazingly enough, the majority of the papers as well as the discussions at the meeting, concentrated on the nanostructured solid state. This re flects the currently extremely intensive quest for developing the electronic and magnetic device generations of the future, which stimulates science be sides the challenge of the unknown as has always been the case since the very beginning of Solid State Physics about 100 years ago.
