West Country Songs (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from West Country Songs The characteristics of Cornwall and the Cornish are rapidly passing away. More than a hundred years ago its language died. N ow its dialect is dying. It is useless to deplore it, for it is inevitable. The Celt, in England at any rate, is doomed to be absorbed by the Saxon. To us Cornishmen, who love so passionately the county that is our own, there comes a heartache as we think of the Cornwall of our fathers lost. Slave Songs of the United States

Book Description

Originally published in 1867, this book is a collection of songs of African-American slaves. A few of the songs were written after the emancipation, but all were inspired by slavery. The wild, sad strains tell, as the sufferers themselves could, of crushed hopes, keen sorrow, and a dull, daily misery, which covered them as hopelessly as the fog from the rice swamps. On the other hand, the words breathe a trusting faith in the life after, to which their eyes seem constantly turned.
