This book deals with a rejection of the widespread fakeries that have emerged in twentieth-century art, which we call by their Platonic name, sophistry. The book also presents brief descriptions of some of the ideas of Martin Heidegger and Nicolas Berdyaev as to what constitutes a beautiful work of art, and how an authentic relation to the beauty in a work of art enhances human existence.




German Expressionist Paintings and Education


Book Description

This book has two aims. The first aim is a modest attempt to help to overcome the neglect to which German expressionist paintings have been condemned by historians and art critics. The second aim is more difficult from an educational perspective. The book points out that a moving beauty and worthy truths call out from many German expressionist paintings. At times, this beauty and these truths may be comprehended straightforwardly. To complement the direct encounter with these paintings, the book suggests learning from concepts, ideas, and insights presented by existentialist philosophers. The book shows that these concepts, ideas, and insights can assist in harkening to the call of beauty and truth that calls out from the paintings of the six German expressionist painters which are discussed here: Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Mueller, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Erich Heckel. Thus, they can assist the educator in showing the grandeur of the works of the six painters. The book points to the educational value of the personal and existential encounter with the beauty and truths that call out from the paintings of these artists. Haim Gordon is professor emeritus at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. He has published, at times in collaboration with colleagues, 26 books and more than 150 papers in professional journals and books on philosophical, educational and political topics. He resides with his wife in Eilat, Israel.







Hobbema and Heidegger

This book shows how the beautiful landscape paintings of Meindert Hobbema, a seventeenth-century painter of the Dutch Golden Age, are in accord with the thought of Martin Heidegger, a twentieth-century philosopher, on beauty and truth. Since little is known about Hobbema's life, this work concentrates on ideas that are central to Heidegger's philosophy of art and beauty and the way these ideas are attuned to Hobbema's landscapes. Heidegger holds that the beauty of a great work of art calls out from that work and is firmly linked to the disclosure of hidden truths concerning essences of beings. This book illustrates in detail that beauty and such truths indeed call out from Hobbema's paintings.




Existentialist Themes and Education

The existentialists presented a philosophical approach which raised questions and illustrated ideas that addressed the grounds and essence of human existence. Among the questions were those that related to the essences of truth, being, human existence, freedom, and of love. The major purpose of this book, is the attempt to counter the expansive reign of the 'passion for the mediocre'. The authors hold that the widespread acceptance of mediocrity effaces all excellence, degrades everyday human existence, and ruins spiritual life. The Sculpted Ear


Book Description

Sound and statuary have had a complicated relationship in Western aesthetic thought since antiquity. Taking as its focus the sounding statue—a type of anthropocentric statue that invites the viewer to imagine sounds the statue might make—The Sculpted Ear rethinks this relationship in light of discourses on aurality emerging within the field of sound studies. Ryan McCormack argues that the sounding statue is best thought of not as an aesthetic object but as an event heard by people and subsequently conceptualized into being through acts of writing and performance. Constructing a history in which hearing plays an integral role in ideas about anthropocentric statuary, McCormack begins with the ancient sculpture of Laocoön before moving to a discussion of the early modern automaton known as Tipu’s Tiger and the statue of the Commendatore in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Finally, he examines statues of people from the present and the past, including the singer Josephine Baker, the violinist Aleksandar Nikolov, and the actor Bob Newhart—with each case touching on some of the issues that have historically plagued the aesthetic viability of the sounding statue. McCormack convincingly demonstrates how sounding statues have served as important precursors and continuing contributors to modern ideas about the ontology of sound, technologies of sound reproduction, and performance practices blurring traditional divides between music, sculpture, and the other arts. The Radical Use of Chance in 20th Century Art

To many, chance and art are antagonistic terms. But a number of 20th century artists have turned this notion on its head by attempting to create artworks based on randomness. Among those, three in particular articulated a well-argued and thorough theory of the radical use of chance in art: André Breton (writer), John Cage (composer) and François Morellet (visual artist). The implications of such a move away from established aesthetics are far-reaching, as much in conceptual as in practical terms, as this book hopes to make clear. Of paramount importance in this coincidentia oppositorum is the suggested possibility of a correlation between the artistic use of chance and a system of thought itself organised around chance. Indeed placing randomness at the centre of one’s art may have deeper philosophical consequences than just on the aesthetical level.

In Sperone Speroni and the Debate over Sophistry in the Italian Renaissance Teodoro Katinis mines a number of little or unstudied primary sources and offers the first book on the rebirth of ancient sophists in the Italian literature of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, from Leonardo Bruni to Jacopo Mazzoni, with a focus on the Italian writer and philosopher Sperone Speroni (1500-1588). Katinis convincingly argues that Speroni is a unique case of an early modern thinker who explicitly rejected Plato’s demonization and defended the public role of the sophistic rhetoric, which enhanced the debate over the sophistic arts and scepticism in a variety of fields and anticipated some of the most revolutionary modern thoughts.




Gorgias and the New Sophistic Rhetoric

In Gorgias and the New Sophistic Rhetoric, Bruce McComiskey achieves three rhetorical goals: he treats a single sophist's rhetorical technê (art) in the context of the intellectual upheavals of fifth-century bce Greece, thus avoiding the problem of generalizing about a disparate group of individuals; he argues that we must abandon Platonic assumptions regarding the sophists in general and Gorgias in particular, opting instead for a holistic reading of the Gorgianic fragments; and he reexamines the practice of appropriating sophistic doctrines, particularly those of Gorgias, in light of the new interpretation of Gorgianic rhetoric offered in this book. In the first two chapters, McComiskey deals with a misconception based on selective and Platonic readings of the extant fragments: that Gorgias's rhetorical technê involves the deceptive practice of manipulating public opinion. This popular and ultimately misleading interpretation of Gorgianic doctrines has been the basis for many neosophistic appropriations. The final three chapters deal with the nature and scope of neosophistic rhetoric in light of the non-Platonic and holistic interpretation of Gorgianic rhetoric McComiskey postulates in his opening chapters. He concludes by examining the future of communication studies to discover what roles neosophistic doctrines might play in the twenty-first century. McComiskey also provides a selective bibliography of scholarship on sophistic rhetoric and philosophy in English since 1900.
