Local Flood Protection, Petersburg, West Virginia

Book Description

The City of Petersburg in Grant County, West Virginia is subject to flooding from the South Branch Potomac River. Serious floods have occurred in March 1936, June 1949, and November 1985. The most recent flood, an approximate once in 400-year event, was more than twice th flow of any previously recorded flood and caused damages totaling about $33 million (October 1989 price levels) in Petersburg. In response to the flooding problem, the Corps of Engineers and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin initiated a cost-shared feasibility study in February 1988 to identify and evaluate possible solutions. The results of the study are described in this document which contains an integrated feasibility report and environmental impact statement.
