Special Days to Celebrate

Book Description

This book was written to help explain to preschoolers and primary school students why and how different holidays are celebrated. As a nursery school teacher, I found that three- and four-year-olds were very aware of the decorations, commercials, and special foods associated with the holidays, but they did not know the reason for the holiday. The children had many questions about what they observed. I couldn't find information written on their level to answer their questions, so I wrote my own stories. This book contains the stories I wrote. I hope this book will help parents and teachers who find themselves in the same situation as I was in, with explanations for their children.

Special Days

Book Description

Okay, so there are other holidays, Christmas and Hanukkah aren't everything! Why, there's New year's, and Thanksgiving, and Independence Day. There's observances like Valentine's Day, Mother's and Father's Days, and Halloween. Everyone has a birthday, so how about a story to celebrate that? Don't each of these (and more) deserve their own short story? Absolutely! This fun, touching collection of sort of short stories covers at least one holiday for each month of the year. New Year's Day, Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, you name it. Even Labor Day, Guy Fawkes Day (for you Brits), and Buddha's Birthday are covered. Even International Forgiveness Day (a great idea, right!) has its own short story. From the award-winning author of Oy! Humbug, who can't seem to stop celebrating holidays, you know these stories are fun, human, humane experiences. Stretch your holiday celebration over the rest of the year! (And there is one Christmas story here, one of Steve's best, as he needed a December story. It's the tale of a house mouse named Dinky. Perfect to read to your children!)
