Speeches and Addresses 1884-1909 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses 1884-1909 Yet although much was then accomplished, all was not done. The imitative colonial propensity of mind still dwells with us. There is still work for the Puritan Spirit which would go its own way and think its own thoughts. It is not altogether our own church, even now in the world of ideas in art, and literature, and among certain elements of our society. Who, for instance, has not heard the profound saying that in this country nature does not lend itself to art Have we not, then, the glories of morning and of evening, the mists of dawn, the radiance of midday, the lightning of the noontide ocean, the infinite beauties of sea and sky, of river and mountain? When nature does not lend itself to art it is because there is no art able to borrow. Let the right men come in the right spirit and they will have no trouble with nature. Addresses and Speeches on Various Occasions, From 1869 to 1879 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Addresses and Speeches on Various Occasions, From 1869 to 1879 Let me only add that in this volume, as in both of those which have preceded it, there has been no attempt to reconstruct what had. Already been composed or uttered, but that, in conformity with the views I have always entertained as to what was due to the truth Of history, every thing has been printed here as it was originally prepared or spoken. Speeches and Addresses (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses The rights and duties Of the press are, at times, much misunderstood. NO one contends, Of course, that it has a right to invade homes for the purpose of prying into strictly private conduct, however de praved. But whenever that conduct takes place under such circumstances that the public must, of necessity, be affected by it, then a public journal has not only the right, but is charged with the duty Of exposing it. If, therefore, the character Of the life led by the plaintiff has been not only in itself immoral, but has been displayed in such a man ner that the public could not but be scandalized by it, I shall appeal to you to establish by your verdict that the newspaper which has held him up in his true light is not only not open to the charge Of overstepping the bounds of its legitimate province, but, on the contrary, deserves commendation for What it has done. It remains for you, therefore, in the discharge not only of the duty which you owe to the plaintiff, but Of that which you owe to the community, carefully to determine the facts Of this case, and then to decide whether those facts legally afford to the defendant as the owner of this paper immunity for this publica tion. Addresses and Speeches on Various Occasions, From 1852 to 1867 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Addresses and Speeches on Various Occasions, From 1852 to 1867 A volume bearing the same title with this, published in 1852, and now nearly out of print, contained the principal Speeches and Addresses delivered by me, during fifteen or sixteen years of public life, as a member of the State or National Legislature. In the present volume are collected my Addresses and Speeches during an equal number of years of private life. They may, perhaps, do something towards illustrating the history of the times, by recalling events of local or National interest, and by the notices which they contain of distinguished persons, or of important institutions. They will at least leave no room for misapprehension hereafter, as to what I may have said about men or things, when I have been called upon to say any thing. Like those in the previous volume, they are given here just as they were spoken, and many of them printed, at the time; with no other change than.
