SPS-5 and SPS-6 SHRP Data Collection

This project required the completion of Construction Data Forms for the Strategic Highway Research Program's (SHRP's) Specific Pavement Studies (SPS) Experiment Number 5, The Rehabilitation of Asphalt Concrete Pavements, and Experiment Number 6, The Rehabilitation of Jointed Portland Cement Concrete Pavements. In Arizona, the SPS-5 experiment construction was done in the eastbound travel lane of Interstate Highway 8, between mileposts 159 and 161 in southwestern Arizona. Eleven test sections were constructed for the experiment, with eight as set forth in SHRP guidelines. In addition, two additional sections were constructed, and one designated as the control section, for a grand total of eleven sections.










Highway Research


Book Description

The level of research activity in the highway sector as a whole has declined precipitously in recent decades, whilst the challenges facing US state highway agencies have escalated. As a result, a Strategic Highway Research Program - SHRP) was initiated to establish collaboration with research bodies tackling similar highway problems in countries worldwide. This collection of reports from around the world presents SHRP`s progress towards providing research-based new products from which the international highway engineering community may benefit. SHRP concentrates on six high-priority research areas: asphaltic materials; pavement performance; cement and concrete; maintenance cost effectiveness; concrete bridge component protection systems and the chemical control of snow and ice.




SHRP-LTPP Traffic Data Collection and Analysis


Book Description

This report provides a summary of the Strategic Highway Research Program's Long-Term Pavement Performance (SHRP-LTPP) 5-year effort to better understand traffic's effect on pavement performance. The report also reviews the traffic data collection program over a 4-year period. It provides a connection with the reports and publications issued during the period by providing an extensive reference list.




SHRP-LTPP Materials Characterization


Book Description

The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) developed two materials characterization programs: one for field sampling, and another for laboratory testing. The SHRP field materials sampling and laboratory materials testing program encompassed all 50 states; 10 Canadian provinces; and Puerto Rico. This report documents the development and execution of these programs for both the General Pavement Studies (GPS) and the Specific Pavement Studies (SPS). These topics are described separately here, although they are linked inherently. Suggestions are given for future materials characterization within the Long-Term Pavement Performance program as it continues under the Federal Highway Administration.




SHRP-LTPP Monitoring Data


Book Description

This report summarizes the LTPP monitoring data collection activities for inclusion in the National Pavement Performance Database. The pavement condition monitoring data include identification of surface distress, profile measurements, deflection testing results, and surface friction measurements. The report also describes traffic, climate, maintenance, rehabilitation, and seasonal monitoring and data collection. Other results and products of the 5-year pavement condition monitoring activity are listed.




SPS-6


Book Description

Nineteen test sections were constructed by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) as part of Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) Specific Pavement Studies (SPS)-6 experiment. The SPS-6 program addresses the rehabilitation of jointed portland cement concrete pavement. The objective of the SPS-6 experiment is to develop improved performance prediction models to be used for determining the additional pavement life that can be expected from the application of a variety of JCP pavement rehabilitation methods, ranging from minimal to maximum investment. Construction of the 19 SPS-6 test sections was successfully incorporated in ADOT project IR-40-4(123) on I-40 at Flagstaff. Eight of the 19 test sections meet the basic SHRP requirements for the experiment. The additional 11 sections were designed by ADOT to evaluate features that are not included in the SHRP experiment design.

Book Description

The Specific Pavement Studies (SPS) portion examines specially constructed pavements, which will help develop better understanding of the effects on performance of a few targeted factors not widely covered in General Pavement Studies (GPS). SPS also explores options for construction of new pavements, the application of maintenance treatments to existing pavements, and the rehabilitation of distressed pavements. This report summarizes the status of SPS as of June 30, 1992.
