Values Across Cultures and Times is a collection of sixteen articles examining the concept of values understood in its broadest sense as the need of the modern man to examine, redefine, and reconstruct previous theories, histories, moralities, social relationships, forms of language and language use. In times of great change, preserving traditional values seems to be particularly difficult, and the authors of these essays respond to the challenge, and approach the notion of changing values from the perspectives of literary studies and linguistics. The book opens with an introductory overview, followed by sixteen articles divided into three sections. The book is aimed at a broad academic audience, while the popular style of the articles also makes the volume appealing to a wider audience interested in different aspects of values. The authors of the articles come from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, and the United States.

The basis for this additional volume are the three volumes of the handbooks Dictionaries. An International Encyclopedia of Lexicography (HSK 5.1–5.3), published between 1989 and 1991. An updating has been perceived as an important desideratum for a considerable time. In the present Supplementary Volume the premises and subjects of HSK 5.1–5.3 are complemented by new articles that take account of the practice-internal and theoretical developments of the last 15 years. Special attention has been given to the following topics: the status and function of lexicographic reference works, the history of lexicography, the theory of lexicography, lexicographic processes, lexicographic training and lexicographic institutions, new metalexicographic methods, electronic and, especially, computer-assisted lexicography.




Studies on the Teaching of Asian Languages in the 21st Century


Book Description

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for, and rapid development in, the learning and teaching of Asian languages as a foreign language throughout the world. Many governments recognize that Asian languages are of strategic economic importance, and thus they are now offered as a foreign language by a great number of schools and higher education institutions. This book contains chapters written by different authors from several countries on key issues and problems in the teaching of the Chinese, Russian, Farsi, Japanese and Malaysian languages, and some comparative studies. The contributors here explore future directions in the teaching of Asian languages in the 21st century. The ten chapters of the book have been prepared by the authors using the scholarly papers they presented at the Second International Symposium on Asian Languages and Literatures (ADES), which was held on 3–4 May 2012 at Erciyes University, Kayseri, Turkey, under the title of “Teaching of Asian Languages in the 21st Century”.
