Waves And Stability In Continuous Media - Proceedings Of The 10th Conference On Wascom 99

Book Description

Mathematical problems concerning time evolution of solutions related to nonlinear systems modelling dynamics of continuous media are of great interest both in wave propagation and in stability problems. During the last few decades many striking developments have taken place, especially in connection with the effects of nonlinearity of the equations describing physical situations. The articles in this book have been written by reputable specialists in the field and represent a valuable contribution to its advancement. The topics are: discontinuity and shock waves; linear and nonlinear stability in fluid dynamics; kinetic theories and comparison with continuum models; propagation and non-equilibrium thermodynamics; exact solutions via group methods; numerical applications.

Wave Dynamics of Generalized Continua

Book Description

This monograph is devoted to problems of propagation and stability of linear and nonlinear waves in continuous media with complex structure. It considers the different media, such as solid with cavities, preliminary deformed disperse medium, solid with porosity filled by the electrically conductive and non-conductive liquid, magnetoelastic, piezo-semiconductors, crystals with dislocations, composites with inclusions, an electrically conductive asymmetrical liquid, a mixture of gas with a drop liquid. The book also considers the propagation of a laser beam through a two-level medium. The presented results are based on methods of evolution and modulation equations that were developed by the authors. The book is intended for scientific and technical researchers, students and post-graduate students specializing in mechanics of continuous media, physical acoustics, and physics of the solid state.

Waves in Layered Media

Book Description

Waves in Layered Media discusses different theories about the relationship between waves and media. The book specifically covers several factors that can affect the behavior and formation of various kinds of waves in different types of media. Comprised of nine chapters, the book establishes the fundamentals by first tackling simplest concepts, such as the behavior plane wave and discretely layered media. The succeeding chapters cover much more complex ideas, such as the refraction and reflection of waves, spherical wave, and wave in inhomogeneous media. The book will be a great asset to researchers whose work involves acoustics, or to professionals whose line of work involves sound waves.

Propagation, Scattering, and Reflection of Waves in Continuous and Random Inhomogeneous Media, and Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems

Book Description

The research work on this project centered about two major subjects. The first is the development of asymptotic, perturbation, and numerical methods for sound wave propagation in the oceans, atmosphere, and other waveguides. The second area is the development of similar methods for solving nonlinear problems. Particular emphasis was given to the nonlinear problems that arise in, bifurcation theory, the nonlinear buckling of elastic plates and shells, and hydrodynamic stability. (Author).
