This book represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute which was held at Bonas from August 25 till Sep tember 5, 1980 and was devoted to the study of "Solar Phenomena in Stars and Stellar Systems". It is intended for a broad audi ence. Students and post-doctoral scientists for example can dis cover new aspects of astrophysics. The general spirit of the ASI was aimed at presenting a unified aspect of astrophysical phenomena which can be studied intensively on the Sun although they are of a much more general nature. On the other hand, spe cialists in solar or stellar physics will find here the latest theoretical developments and/or the most recent observations made in their own field of research. An extensive bibliography will be found throughout the various sections, to which the reader may refer, for more detailed developments in various specific areas. In the past, stellar and solar astrophysics have more or less followed their own independent tracks. However, with the rapid development of modern techniques, in particular artificial satellites like the International Ultraviolet Explorer and the Einstein Observatory, which provide a new wealth of data, it appears that chromospheres, coronae, magnetic fields, mass loss and stellar winds, etc . . . . , are found not only in the Sun but occur also in other stars. Frequently these other stars represent quite different conditions of gravity, lumino~ity, and other parameters from those occurring in the Sun.




Non-Periodic Phenomena in Variable Stars

From September 5 until September 9, 1968, the IVth Colloquium on Variable Stars was held in Budapest, Hungary. The Colloquium was organized by a committee consisting of G.H. Herbig (President), A. Boyarchuk, M.W. Feast, D. McNamara, J.E. Merrill, D.J.K. O'Connell, V. Tsessevich, W. Wenzel. The local organization was placed in the hands of a Committee consist ing of members of the Konkoly Observatory, Budapest: L. Detre (Chairman), 1. Almar, Julia Balazs-Detre, K. Barlai, M. Ill, S. Kany6, M. Lovas and of J. Kovacs (Hungarian Academy of Sciences). The Colloquium was attended by about 90 scientists representing Argentina, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, France, GDR, GFR, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Roumania, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom, U.S.A., U.S.S.R. As chairmen acted at the sessions: M.W. Feast, G.H. Herbig, J. Sahade, A. Boyarchuk, W. Wenzel, F.B. Wood and L. Rosino. The contents of the present volume parallel closely the programme of the individual sessions of the Colloquium.

The Symbiotic Phenomenon

Symbiotic stars were identified spectroscopically as M giants with a very strong He II 4686 emission line. After five decades of study by many astronomers, the first internatioinal meetings devoted to symbiotics were held at the University of Colorado (Boulder) and at the Haute Provence Observatory during the Summer of 1981. These conferences emphasized exciting new results obtained by modern satellite (EINSTEIN, IUE) and ground-based observatories. Although the vast majority of the participants were already fairly sure that symbiotics are almost certainly interacting binary systems, and not extremely peculiar single stars, it was not clear exactly which types of physical processes were needed to be invoked to explain their observed behaviour. Many were even worried that it might not be possible to clearly define a class of "symbiotic stars" , and thus establish a unique model applicable to any system. Since the publication of the Haute-Provence proceedings, our understanding of the physical processes occuring in symbiotic stars (and in related objects such as cataclysmic variables and compact planetary nebulae) has greatly improved. We now speak confidently of a "symbiotic phenomenon" , in which an evolved red giant and a hot companion object (usually thought to be an accreting main sequence star or a luminous white dwarf star) happily coexist.
