Nel momento in cui si parla di crisi dell’istruzione, eppure si realizza – almeno nelle aree occidentali del benessere – l’obiettivo, per tanti secoli considerato utopico, dell’educazione per tutta la vita, dell’accesso a tutti alla lettura, alla cultura, che conoscenze abbiamo in materia di storia dell’istruzione, dell’educazione, della formazione? Quali conoscenze e competenze ci sono state tramandate come appartenenti a coloro – genitori, educatori, insegnanti, formatori, facilitatori, e tante altre figure di adulti – che sono stati, in un momento o un altro della loro vita, in posizione di educatori, formatori, coach, etc.? I tradizionali manuali di storia della pedagogia, da questo punto di vista, segnano il passo, poiché concepiscono la storia educativa sostanzialmente come storia delle idee e del pensiero dei grandi Autori e Ideologi del passato, non tanto come storia di fatti ed eventi educativo-formativi che hanno segnato realmente i passaggi epocali della trasmissione dei saperi, delle pratiche, dell’identità stessa. Ma la ricerca contemporanea nasce ancora da quella storica, dove lo studio delle esperienze socio-educative fondamentali dell'uomo o la storia della mentalità formativa sono inevitabilmente fonte di esperienza per costruire o ricostruire le azioni formative del presente. A partire dalla modernità, gli orientamenti formativi ratificano un’esigenza percepita diffusamente, di responsabilità (umanesimo metodologico: Barocco, Scienza Nuova, Illuminismo) e di intenzionalità formative (umanesimo storico e dialettico: Romanticismo e movimenti dell’Ottocento e Primo Novecento), di valorizzazione delle potenzialità del singolo, che rifiuta le forme di omologazione e standardizzazione di pensiero e atteggiamenti che frammentano e impoveriscono la condizione esistenziale degli individui. Lanciando uno sguardo al futuro sulla base del passato la ricerca storico-educativa si conclude con la proposta di un framework dinamico dell’eco-identità inteso come contributo per elaborare un nuovo progetto di uomo per la formazione contemporanea.




Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth Century Italy

Recent studies of medieval preaching have tended to focus on sermon texts. This is the first scholarly study in English of preaching and its social context in thirteenth-century Italy. Augustine Thompson O.P., both an academic and a preacher, reconstructs the "Great Devotion" of 1233 and analyzes its devotional, social, political, and legal elements. He shows how the preachers of this revival crafted an image of divine authority that supported their intervention in factional disputes and facilitated their arbitration in social and political conflicts. They exploited forms from revived Roman Law and developing city statutes in order to create flexible procedures for mediation, and ultimately were able to revise communal ordinances to enshrine their message of social harmony. This is a work of original scholarship, carefully researched and lucidly written, which is a valuable contribution to our understanding of religion and politics in the middle ages.

Natural Law and the Law of Nations in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Italy

The open access publication of this book was financially supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This volume sheds new light on modern theories of natural law through the lens of the fragmented political contexts of Italy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the dramatic changes of the times. From the age of reforms, through revolution and the ‘Risorgimento’, the unification movement which ended with the creation of the unified Kingdom of Italy in 1861, we see a move from natural law and the law of nations to international law, whose teaching was introduced in Italian universities of the newly created Kingdom. The essays collected here show that natural law was not only the subject of a highly codified academic teaching, but also provided a broader conceptual and philosophical frame underlying the ‘science of man’. Natural law is also a language wherein reform programmes of education and of politics have taken form, affecting a variety of discourses and literary genres. Benjamin G. Kohl (1938-2010) taught at Vassar College from 1966 till his retirement as Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities in 2001. His doctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University was directed by Frederic C. Lane, and his principal historical interests focused on northern Italy during the Renaissance, especially on Padua and Venice. His scholarly production includes the volumes Padua under the Carrara, 1318-1405 (1998), and Culture and Politics in Early Renaissance Padua (2001), and the online database The Rulers of Venice, 1332-1524 (2009). The database is eloquent testimony of his priority attention to historical sources and to their accessibility, and also of his enthusiasm for collaboration and sharing among scholars.

In the late Middle Ages, Italy was one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. Its coasts, the Apennines, the perialpine area and the plains were all home to a large number of smaller towns, lands, villages, castra, and 'quasi cites'. These settlements were all very diverse in terms of demographic consistency, social articulation and economic dynamism, but together they constituted a characteristic and constitutive element of the Italian historical identity: an 'original personality'. This volume, thanks to some framing essays and a mapping of individual cases involving most of the northern, central and southern regions, aims at investigating the active research on this topic over the last thirty to forty years.

Over the past 30 years, cultural history has moved from the periphery to the centre of historical studies, profoundly influencing the way we look at and analyze all aspects of the past. In this volume, a distinguished group of international historians has come together to consider the rise of cultural history in general, and to highlight the particular role played in this rise by Peter Burke, the first professor of Cultural History at the University of Cambridge and one of the most prolific and influential authors in the field.
