Stray Wives

Book Description

Whereas my husband, Enoch Darling, has at sundry times used me in so improper and cruel a manner, as to destroy my happiness and endanger my life, and whereas he has not provided for me as a husband ought, but expended his time and money unadvisedly, at taverns . . . . I hereby notify the public that I am obliged to leave him. Phebe Darling, January 13, 1796 Hundreds of provocative notices such as this one ran in New England newspapers between 1790 and 1830. These elopement notices--advertisements paid for by husbands and occasionally wives to announce their spouses' desertions as well as the personal details of their marital conflicts--testify to the difficulties that many couples experienced, and raise questions about the nature of the marital relationship in early national New England. Stray Wives examines marriage, family, gender, and the law through the lens of these elopement notices. In conjunction with legal treatises, court records, and prescriptive literature, Mary Beth Sievens highlights the often tenuous relationships among marriage law, marital ideals, and lived experience in the early Republic, an era of exceptional cultural and economic change. Elopement notices allowed couples to negotiate the meaning of these changes, through contests over issues such as gender roles, consumption, economic support, and property ownership. Sievens reveals the ambiguous, often contested nature of marital law, showing that husbands' superior status and wives' dependence were fluid and negotiable, subject to the differing interpretations of legal commentators, community members, and spouses themselves.

Insatiable Wives

Book Description

"This enlightening work investigates the history, incidence, and causes of a unique sexual lifestyle pursued by increasing numbers of couples. The most common terms used to describe it are 'hotwife/cuckold lifestyle.' This sexual practice, a form of sexual nonmonogamy, is distinguished from swinging and polyamory in that the husband rarely seeks sexual contact outside the marriage except for participation in group sex with his wife and other men, while the wife is permitted, and often encouraged, to pursue unrestrained sexual encounters with other men. The author includes interviews and comments from couples living the lifestyle throughout the United States and presents the stories in an attempt to determine the history of this sexual practice and evolutionary underpinnings of this uncommon and socially taboo behavior in an effort to make it more comprehensible to those engaged in the lifestyle and those who are just curious." -- page 4 of cover.

Reminiscent of Three Women and The State of Affairs—and based on years of research and in-depth interviews with more than sixty men—this eye-opening and explosive study explores why men cheat, how they do it, and the repercussions that infidelity has on every aspect of life. It is estimated that one in four married men cheat on their wives. Of those, roughly half claim that they are “very happy” in their marriages. So why risk ruining it all? Is it the sex? The affirmation? The danger? Yes, it’s all of that. But it’s also so much more. The author of this book has conducted a series of in-depth interviews with men and women of all ages and backgrounds who have cheated in the past or are currently cheating on their spouses. They talked openly and intimately about details of their affairs, and the emotions that they experience before, during, and after. Women According to Men

Book Description

What was it like to be a woman when England was ruled by a queen, but women had almost no legal power? When marriage cost women their property rights? When the ideal woman was rarely seen and never heard in public? In other words, what was it like to be a woman in England between 1525 and 1675? Suzanne Hull, in Women According to Men answers these questions and more, taking fascinating look at how women were described, and prescribed to act, by men during that time. Hull, the first woman ever appointed as a Principal Officer at the Huntington Library as well as the author of Chaste, Silent and Obedient, uses her years of experience researching 16th- and 17th-century texts to provide you with an authentic look at the state of women during the Elizabethan era. Through an examination of texts written during that time about and for women, Hull elucidates what the rules for women were then, as well as discussing health habits, household remedies, theories on conception, the care of children, the making of food, fashion and more.

Ten Things I Still Hate About Those Women

Book Description

"Merely Words of Inspiration" was written because of an awakening of my spiritual nature, which inspired me. I would hear different phrases during the day at work, on television, or just having a casual conversation during the day. I was given an idea and began to write such as the following article: "Tell it Like It Is" or "Sugarcoated". Jesus never sugarcoated anything. He always told the truth, the whole truth. When we do not tell it like it is, we are doing the work of the adversary. He is the author of confusion, which is his truth. The book was also written to enhance our spiritual awareness. It was written to let you see that the everyday phrases, such as another article titled "Can You Hear Me Now?", can be inspirational in the right circumstances. Here is an insert from the following article: "Have we ever thought about Jesus saying, "Can You Hear Me Now?" Why can't we hear Him? Is it because we are listening to the world and not for His voice? It is written, "I am the Good Shepherd, and I know my sheep, and am known of mine. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they will hear my voice: and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd"(John 10:14, 16). This is something to get excited about, being in heaven with our Lord and Savior. Have a Blessed Day
