Excerpt from Studies in Isaiah XL-LXVI: With an Introductory Chapter on the Composite Character of Isaiah I-XXXIX The following Studies form the elaboration of a course of lectures given in Cambridge last year to the students who came up for the Vacation Term for Biblical Study. The Studies have, with three exceptions, been selected with the object of dealing with such subjects as, from their nature, cannot be discussed at much length in Commentaries; this applies more especially to the doctrinal and archæological Studies, which take up the major part of the following pages. Points of exegesis can also be dealt with more at length in a lecture than in a commentary where the entire text of a book has to be explained. The two first Studies, which are introductory, deal with the composite character of the book of Isaiah; this, though amply considered in the Commentaries, seemed to be a necessary preliminary here too, because it has a direct bearing on the different doctrinal standpoints in the book. In-depth exegesis from a renowned Hebrew scholar This Eerdmans Critical Commentary volume is Shalom Paul's comprehensive, all-inclusive study of the oracles of an anonymous prophet known only as Second Isaiah who prophesied in the second half of the sixth century B.C.E. Paul examines Isaiah 40–66 through a close reading of the biblical text, offering thorough exegesis of the historical, linguistic, literary, and theological aspects of the prophet's writings. He also looks carefully at intertextual influences of earlier biblical and extrabiblical books, draws on the contributions of medieval Jewish commentators, and supports the contention that Second Isaiah should include chapters 55–66, thus eliminating the need to demarcate a Third Isaiah.
