Studies in the French Renaissance (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Studies in the French Renaissance All except two of the papers contained in this volume have appeared before in some form or another. But all have been revised, added to, and in some cases largely rewritten. The result is that nearly half the volume consists of new matter. The first paper, "The University of Caen," was originally printed in a volume entitled Fasciculus Joanni Willis Clark dicatus, in which many friends of the late J.W. Clark united to express their sense of his lifelong devotion to the cause of knowledge and the service of the University. My own contribution seemed a fitting tribute from an alumnus of Henry VI's twin foundations of Eton and Kings College, and I was pleased to find that one of the Rectors of the University of Caen was in many respects a prototype of our friend. He was not only Registrary of his University, but he was distinguished for his devotion to its interests; he gave freely of his books to its library; and he wrote a play for the students, in which he took the chief part. The paper on "The Prose Romances of Chivalry" appeared in French in the Revue du seizieme Steele for 1919; besides translating it I have carefully revised it. "Rabelais and Geographical Discovery" was contributed to the Modern Language Review from 1906 to 1910. "Rabelais and Henri II" is practically new, only six pages having appeared before - in French, in the Revue du seizieme Siecle (1907 and1916). The first part of "Rabelais and the Fifth Book," which relates to the He Sonante, was published in the Modern Language Review for 1906-7; in the second part I have examined the rest of the book. It is for others to determine how far I have solved the long-disputed question of Rabelais's authorship. The account of "Humanism under Francis I" is an expanded and practically rewritten version of an article in the English Historical Review(1900). Even now it does not pretend to be more than a sketch of a small part of a very large subject - the history of French Humanism - which still awaits its historian. The French Renaissance (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from The French Renaissance The government of Charles VIII. And Louis XII. Was patriarchal rather than despotic, but the essential absolutism of both monarchs is shown by the fact that their Italian expeditions were undertaken against the real interests of the nation, and at the prompting of favourite ministers. The Literature of the French Renaissance, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Literature of the French Renaissance, Vol. 1 N 1885 I published as a prologue to a larger work an Introductory Essay', which purported to give a brief summary of the condition of learning and literature in France at the close of the Middle Ages, and to trace the first workings of the Renaissance spirit down to the opening of the reign of Francis I. The First Part of the main history was nearly completed by the beginning of 1890, when ill health added to the claims of other work compelled me practically to lay it aside. It was not until five years ago that I was able to take it up again in more than a desultory fashion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Skeptics of the French Renaissance (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Skeptics of the French Renaissance Baptiste Morin, Gilles de Roberval, Jean Stilla, and Pierre Gassendi, were superior to those who followed in the steps and propagated the teaching of Galileo Galilei. We must regard as part of this larger learning in mathematics and physical science, the greater amplitude and diversity of skeptical free-thought which we have already asserted to characterize French philosophy. The bearing of this point on the subject - matter of the present volume is that which its readers ought especially to bear in mind. The Literature of the French Renaissance

Book Description

Excerpt from The Literature of the French Renaissance: An Introductory Essay Histories of literature are apt to be confined to biography and criticism. The writers of them concern themselves, not so much with the broad main stream of a nation s literary developement, as with the rivers, sometimes indeed with the tiniest rivulets, which feed it. Thus they produce works, which however interesting and instructive they may be, are hardly entitled to be called histories. For a history, I take it, should have at any rate two features. It should be a continuous story, and it should deal with causes and effects. Into the vexed question of what is the province of History par excellence, whether it should confine itself to an account of the organisation of states, or whether it should more fully deserve its preeminence by dealing with the whole life of a nation, I need not happily enter.
