Globalization and Development draws upon the experiences of the Latin American and Caribbean region to provide a multidimensional assessment of the globalization process from the perspective of developing countries. Based on a study by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), this book gives a historical overview of economic development in the region and presents both an economic and noneconomic agenda that addresses disparity, respects diversity, and fosters complementarity among regional, national, and international institutions. Many of the contributing social scientists are Latin American, and their ideas are presented in English for the first time here. They combine the two paradigms of sustainable development and globalization to explore how the latter impacts prospects for the former, and consider how best to build partnerships between the state and other agencies of civil society at the national, subnational, and local levels. Among the topics are lessons from the European experience of privatization and neoliberalism, regionalism and globalism as alternative models for Latin American integration, the consequences of privatization in Chile, and case studies of three regions in Brazil. Now in a second edition, this book explains Latin America's economic, political, social and cultural transformations, its association with globalization and search for modernity, and how these transformations are affecting the people of the region. Using a political economy approach to unravel these concepts, the emphasis is placed on interpreting the macro-level structures that frame the transformations taking place. Updated and revised to include more student friendly features, the authors have substantially rewritten the material, including three new chapters, to examine the challenges facing Latin American in the twenty-first century.

There is a silent globalization being carried out far below the action of multinational firms, international organizations, and state policies. It is the work of societies--communities of determined and creative people. Communities in Globalization richly illustrates the experiences of three Central American communities connected with global markets. The unique perspective of each is developed to show the economic, political-institutional, and social effects of its connection with world trade. Ultimately, this book seeks to identify the resources that allow a community to face globalization while minimizing risks and maximizing opportunities.

Following a study on the world flows of American products during early globalization, here the authors examine the reverse process. By analyzing the imperial political economy, the introduction, adaptation and rejection of new food products in America, as well as of other European, Asian and African goods, American Globalization, 1492–1850, addresses the history of consumerism and material culture in the New World, while also considering the perspective of the history of ecological globalization. This book shows how these changes triggered the formation of mixed imagined communities as well as of local and regional markets that gradually became part of a global economy. But it also highlights how these forces produced a multifaceted landscape full of contrasts and recognizes the plurality of the actors involved in cultural transfers, in which trade, persuasion and violence were entwined. The result is a model of the rise of consumerism that is very different from the ones normally used to understand the European cases, as well as a more nuanced vision of the effects of ecological imperialism, which was, moreover, the base for the development of unsustainable capitalism still present today in Latin America. Can Latin America compete? Many argue that the macroeconomic and trade reforms of the 1990s merely put a handsome coat of paint over education, labour, judicial, and administrative reforms that remain incomplete. This book identifies ten factors that most influence the competitiveness of Latin American nations and will shape their economic futures.
