A unique hybrid between monograph and field guide, offering insights into the design practice and technical expertise of Houston-based firm Interloop--Architecture. Interloop--Architecture is a Houston-based design office founded in 2001 by principals Dawn Finley and Mark Wamble, who both also teach at Rice University's School of Architecture. The firm's focus is on innovative building technologies, inventive forms, and precise material finishes. Their project types range from the design of custom furniture and fixtures to private residences, research complexes, and cultural institutions. System of Novelties is the first book on Interloop--Architecture's work to date, tracking the firm's formation and trajectory. It operates between a monograph and a field guide, presenting novel works of architectural design within a broader context of influence, procedures, and techniques that are threaded from project to project over a period of two decades. It features a diverse collection of built and speculative designs that are framed through three research topics: Information--Shape, Procedure--Assembly, and Material - Pattern. All this is supplemented with graphic notes that synthetically connect the unique and recurring systems engaged in this innovative architectural practice. System of Novelties offers unique insights on innovative forms of contemporary practice in architecture and demonstrates the firm's technical expertise with material, manufacturing, and delivery processes.




Designing Everyday Life

BIO 50 breaks with the traditional system of awards, choosing instead to award collaboration, its process and outcomes. Recognizing the idea that design is a discipline that permeates all layers of contemporary life, BIO launches an unprecedented effort to engage designers and agents from Slovenia and abroad in a collaborative approach that will address themes that affect everyday life. Guided by a group of mentors from various disciplines, eleven teams have tackled the topics Affordable Living Knowing Food Public Water, Public Space Walking the City Hidden Crafts The Fashion System Hacking Households Nanotourism Engine Blocks Observing Space Designing Life Each team has created specific projects that are developed and implemented during the Biennial. Drawing from the complex network generated around BIO 50, "Designing Everyday Life" serves as a reader, compiling written and visual material on the many layers that compose the biennial. Notes, essays, and interviews, along with sketches, photographs, and diagrams, are aggregating the manifold dimensions of each team s collaborative work process, and illuminate strategies and roles for design in a contemporary world. An opening section introduces the topics discussed throughout the different components of the publication, arguing new priorities for the design discipline in contemporary times. Essays and visual material come together to articulate new roles for a discipline that has changed beyond the universe of mass-made products and solutions, and instead inhabits a fundamentally new universe in a series of small-scale, customized scenarios. Exploring the changing definition of design will illuminate its possible future. The concluding chapter reflects on the history and legacy of the world s oldest design event. It uses the history of BIO as an opportunity to explore changes in the last fifty years within the design discipline, western society and everyday life. With contributions by Slovenian and international experts, a series of reflections on BIO as a meeting point for design between East and West in Central Europe allow to extrapolate conclusions about European design in the immediate future. "Designing Everyday Life" also features interviews with Alice Rawsthorn, design critic at New York Times, Konstantin Grcic, industrial designer, and Sasa Machtig, industrial designer. MAO co-produces "Designing Everyday Life" with "Z33," a space for contemporary art based in the Belgian city of Hasselt. Artificial intelligence and intelligent digital systems have become indispensible to many areas of modern life. This book presents the proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Novelties in Intelligent Digital Systems (NIDS2021), held in Athens, Greece, from 30 September to 1 October 2021. The conference took place as a virtual event due to COVID-19 restrictions. The NIDS conference lays special emphasis on the novelties of intelligent systems and on the interdisciplinary research which enables, supports, and enhances Artificial Intelligence (AI) in software development. If art and science have one thing in common, it’s a hunger for the new—new ideas and innovations, new ways of seeing and depicting the world. But that desire for novelty carries with it a fundamental philosophical problem: If everything has to come from something, how can anything truly new emerge? Is novelty even possible? In Novelty, Michael North takes us on a dazzling tour of more than two millennia of thinking about the problem of the new, from the puzzles of the pre-Socratics all the way up to the art world of the 1960s and ’70s. The terms of the debate, North shows, were established before Plato, and have changed very little since: novelty, philosophers argued, could only arise from either recurrence or recombination. Design from the Alps 1920-2020


Book Description

Over centuries, the transnational Alpine region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino (Alto Adige) has developed along ancient trade routes between Germany and Austria on one and northern Italy on the other side of the Alps. Similar to the region's modern and contemporary architecture, its product design is in many cases rooted in a rich local tradition of craftsmanship. Yet since the 1920s, this multilingual region has also proven its remarkable openness to European modernism's most progressive movements and become an unexpected laboratory for technical and formal exploration in the middle of the continent. 'Design from the Alps', published to coincide with an exhibition at museum Kunst Meran in autumn 2019, tells the story of a century of product design from Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino, highlighting the vast variety of discoveries and innovations that have emerged there. Featured artists include, among others, Fortunato Depero (1892-1960), whose experiments were inspired by the Secondo Futurismo, Gino Pollini (1903-91), a pioneer of the interwar period, as well as the celebrated architects and designers Lois Welzenbacher (1889-1955), Clemens Holzmeister (1886-1983), and Ettore Sottsas (1917-2007). Lavishly illustrated, the book follows the many protagonists of this at the same time heterogenous and collectively strong scene and offers an insightful tour d'horizon of the manifaceted design culture of western Austria and northern Italy.
