Book Description

白先勇,可以說是當代華文作家中,不論是在台灣、在中國、在東南亞、在其他各地的華人世界中,最負盛名、最受肯定的作家。他的文學活動、創作成就和作家地位,與台灣文學的關係,是一個值得探討的現象,也是本叢刊這一專輯譯介他的作品的主要原因和探討的主題。 這一專輯,由白先勇提供尚未翻譯成英文的小說,共五篇。其中收錄在《紐約客》中的有四篇:〈謫仙怨〉、〈骨灰〉、〈Danny Boy〉、〈Tea for Two〉。加上1971年作者與夏志清合譯的〈謫仙記〉,以及1980年作者與尹佩霞合譯的〈夜曲〉,《紐約客》一書中的六篇,以此完結。此外另有一篇近作,〈Silent Night〉,該是屬於《紐約客》系列,最初發表於《聯合報》「當代小說特區」(2015年12月24-25日)。 除了五篇小說之外,我們另外選譯了四篇散文,代表四個不同的題材,呈現在評論方面的不同面向:對《現代文學》當初創刊的回顧、五四以來中國小說缺乏藝術經營的問題、小說與電影的關係,以及一篇對新詩的評論—白先勇知道台灣詩壇壁壘分明,向來不涉及新詩的評論,這篇〈望帝春心的哀歌—讀杜國清的《心雲集》〉,也可以看出小說家與詩人對人生愛與哀的情感書寫,自有一份戚戚然的知音共鳴。 It could be said that Pai Hsien-yung is the most renowned and broadly recognized contemporary Chinese writer, whether in Taiwan, China, Southeast Asia, or any other region of the Chinese world. His literary activities, achievements, and status as an eminent writer within the context of Taiwan literature is a phenomenon worthy of study. Therefore, we dedicate an entire issue to exploring it.

本輯以王禎和的短篇小說為主題,除了凸顯王禎和於台灣文學史上作為鄉土文學的先驅地位,也旨在向英語讀者譯介其具台灣鄉土特色的系列作品。本輯特邀臺大外文系鄭恆雄教授擔任客座編輯,撰寫〈導論〉並選擇英譯的作品:〈那一年冬天〉、〈兩隻老虎〉、〈小林來台北〉、〈伊會唸咒〉、〈素蘭要出嫁〉、〈老鼠捧茶請人客〉,以及〈素蘭小姐要出嫁──終身大事〉。前述七篇王禎和之原著則分別由長期耕耘台灣文學英譯的黃瑛姿、葛浩文(Howard Goldblatt)、林麗君、陶忘機(John Balcom)、古芃(Bert M. Scruggs)以及台灣學者董崇選、強勇傑擔綱譯出。 The latest special issue of Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series focuses on the short stories written by Wang Chen-ho not only to reveal his leading role in the Nativist literature that rose in Taiwan during the 1990s, but to introduce his works in the unique local language of Taiwan for English language readers. In this special issue on Wang Chen-ho, seven stories were selected for translation: “The Winter That Year,” “Two Tigers,” “Little Lin Comes to Taipei,” “She Really Can Put Curses on People,” “Sulan's Gonna Get Married,” “The Mouse Serves a Guest Tea,” and “Miss Sulan's Gonna Get Married—A Lifetime of Marital Bliss.” These seven stories span the two periods of Wang's works mentioned above. The first five belong to the first period of Naturalism, while the last two break away from Naturalism to embrace broader themes, even containing a lot of comedy, as in the final story, “Miss Sulan's Gonna Get Married—A Lifetime of Marital Bliss.”

Book Description

Translation of Contemporary Taiwan Literature in a Cross-Cultural Context explores the social, cultural, and linguistic implications of translation of Taiwan literature for transnational cultural exchange. It demonstrates principally how asymmetrical cultural relationships, mediation processes, and ideologies of the translation players constitute the culture-specific translation activity as a highly contested site, where translation can reconstruct and rewrite the literature and the culture it represents. Four main theoretical themes are explored in relation to such translation activity: sociological studies, cultural and rewriting studies, English as a lingua franca, and social and performative linguistics. These offer insightful perspectives on the translation as an interpretive encounter between not only two languages, two cultural systems and assumptions taking place, but also among various translation mediators. This book will be useful to scholars and students working on translation and cultural studies, China/Taiwan literature studies, and literature studies in cross-cultural contexts.

Apart from “new poetry” composed in the vernacular language, the tradition of classical poetry originating in China has also been maintained in Taiwan. We cannot ignore the fact that those poets who continued to compose classical verse, as well as the activities of their poetry societies, are yet another aspect of the diversity of Chinese-language poetic development in Taiwan which at the same time has unique local characteristics. Professor Huang's organization of the issue includes an introductory essay, entitled “Poems that Speak of Taiwan—Speaking of Taiwan Poetry” in which she gives a brief summary of the historical background and special character of the development of classical poetry in Taiwan. This issue contains the verse of twenty-four poets. From 1924, when Hsieh Chun-mu first published four “Poems in Imitation,” the development of new poetry in Taiwan has a history of almost one hundred years. The roots of new poetry in Taiwan with its “twin flower bulbs,” to use the phrase coined by Chen Chien-wu, has now bloomed and borne fruit. It manifests diversified themes, and places great stress on both artistic expression and social concern. It recognizes globalization as the major trend of the times, and maintains a dynamic balance between nativist consciousness and the ensibilities of the Chinese cultural diaspora. Taiwan literature and its new poetry written in Chinese should have a place in the Chinese world community,as well as in the history of world literature. Limited by the space allowed for the journal, we could only select works related to “local” and “quotidian” writing. Yet we hope to observe through these works the manner in which the unique charm and gracefulness of contemporary poetry from Taiwan has blossomed in the garden of world literature. 這一專輯精選具有代表性的詩人二十四家。 從1924年謝春木發表「詩的模仿」四首算起,台灣新詩的發展也有將近一百年的歷史。新詩「兩個球根」在台灣已經開花結果,呈現出主題多元,創作藝術與關懷現實並重,面對全球化的時代趨勢,保持本土意識與文化離散互相呼應和抗衡。台灣文學和以華文創作的新詩,不僅在華人世界,甚至在世界文學的大花園裡,都應該占有一席之地。我們出版這一專輯,收到篇幅的限制,只能以「地方與日常」選錄相關詩作,藉以展現台灣當代詩在世界花園裡一枝獨秀的風姿。




The Columbia Sourcebook of Literary Taiwan

This sourcebook contains more than 160 documents and writings that reflect the development of Taiwanese literature from the early modern period to the twenty-first century. Selections include seminal essays in literary debates, polemics, and other landmark events; interviews, diaries, and letters by major authors; critical and retrospective essays by influential writers, editors, and scholars; transcripts of historical speeches and conferences; literary-society manifestos and inaugural journal prefaces; and governmental policy pronouncements that have significantly influenced Taiwanese literature. These texts illuminate Asia's experience with modernization, colonialism, and postcolonialism; the character of Taiwan's Cold War and post–Cold War cultural production; gender and environmental issues; indigenous movements; and the changes and challenges of the digital revolution. Transitions in Taiwan

"Taiwan's peaceful and democratic society is built upon on decades of authoritarian state violence that it is still coming to terms with. Following 50 years of Japanese colonization, Taiwan was occupied by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) at the close of World War II in 1945. The party massacred thousands of Taiwanese while it established a military dictatorship on the island with the tacit support of the United States. Although early episodes of state violence (such as the 228 Incident in 1947) and post-1980s democratization in Taiwan have received a significant amount of literary and scholarly attention, relatively less has been written or translated about the White Terror and martial law period, which began in 1949. The White Terror was aimed at alleged proponents of Taiwanese independence as well as supposed communist collaborators wiped out an entire generation of intellectuals. Both native-born Taiwanese as well as mainland Chinese exiles were subject to imprisonment, torture, and execution. During this time, the KMT institutionally favored mainland Chinese over native-born Taiwanese and reserved most military, educational, and police positions for the former. Taiwanese were forcibly "re-educated" as Chinese subjects. China-centric national history curricula, forced Mandarin-language pedagogy and media, and the re-naming of streets and public spaces after places in China further enforced a representational regime of Chineseness to legitimize the authority of the KMT, which did not lift martial law until 1987. Taiwan's contemporary commitment to transitional justice and democracy hinges on this history of violence, for which this volume provides a literary treatment as essential as it is varied. This is among the first collection of stories to comprehensively address the social, political, and economic aspects of White Terror, and to do so with deep attention to their transnational character. Featuring contributions from many of Taiwan's most celebrated authors, and written in genres that range between realism, satire, and allegory, it examines the modes and mechanisms of the White Terror and party-state exploitation in prisons, farming villages, slums, military bases, and professional communities. Indigenous Writers of Taiwan

Few people beyond the shores of Taiwan are aware that it is home to a population of indigenous peoples who for more than fifteen thousand years have lived on the island. Over the years, through the Chinese imperial period, the Japanese occupation, and for most of the twentieth century, the indigenous peoples of Taiwan were marginalized and deprived of rights. However, with the lifting of martial law in 1987, new government policies regarding ethnic groups, and growing interest in Taiwan's aboriginal peoples, indigenous writing began to blossom. With its intense and lyrical explorations of a fading culture, indigenous writing has become an important topic of discussion in Taiwanese literary circles. This collection of indigenous literature is the first such anthology in English. In selecting the stories, essays, and poems for the anthology, the editors provide a representative sampling from each of Taiwan's nine indigenous tribes. The writers explore such themes as the decline of traditional ways of life in Taiwan's aboriginal communities, residual belief in ancestral spirits, assimilation into a society dominated by Han Chinese, and the psychological and economic encroachment of the outside world. Their writings offer previously unheard perspectives on the plight of aboriginal cultures and the experiences of Taiwanese minorities. John Balcom has included an introduction to provide the reader with background information on Taiwan's indigenous peoples.
