Tectonics is an old, ontological concept which simultaneously claims to cover the aesthetics/meaning and the technological/technical in architecture. However, since the advent of ‘modernity’, the relationship between architecture and building technology has been problematic. Some of these problems, which are reflected in the theories of architecture and tectonics, relate to the separation of the technology/technical dimension from the aesthetic/artistic, rendering one of them dominant over the other. This book explores the tectonic affects in architecture because these do not separate building technology and aesthetics or meaning. Affects are preconscious aesthetic feelings which can cause meanings if we start thinking about these affects. The book claims that tectonic affects can generate aesthetic value and meaning. It adopts a practical position towards architectural aesthetics and meaning, and concentrates on tectonic affects.




Tectonics in the Twenty-first Century

This thesis is an exploration of the meaning of tectonics in contemporary architecture. The topic of tectonics can be approached as a relationship of an architectural structural concept with space/form, assembly, and surface. Recently, however, architectural historians and theorists such as Kenneth Frampton, with his 1990 essay, "Rappel à l'Ordre, the Case for the Tectonic," and his 2006 book Studies in Tectonic Culture: the Poetics of Construction in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Architecture, have questioned the capacity of contemporary architectural design culture to fully integrate the notion of tectonics, which calls for a highly expressive relationship between structural force and form, into today's built projects. Is the notion of tectonic architecture fading? Or, is the view of tectonics held by Frampton and his followers incomplete, rendering them a partial understanding of tectonic presence in contemporary architecture? Or, lastly, is the notion of tectonics no longer relevant considering the vast, rapid changes during the recent half-century in the creation and perception of architecture? This thesis hopes to address these questions with a survey of the meaning of "tectonic" that considers the challenges to its understanding in current architectural discourse and practice. It aims to grasp the strengths and weaknesses of Frampton's position. Further, opportunities to expand the definition of tectonics are sought, so that it may be shown to be relevant to changing values, design sensibilities, and technologies. In addition, a series of case studies will be presented that merit a new (or, in some cases, renewed) notion of tectonics. These case studies are selected based on the premise that they stand for a position that offers a relationship between form, space, surface, and assembly to the poetics of construction, but also that addresses the conditions that Frampton feared would render tectonic culture's demise. The conclusive message urges architectural discourse to seek out tectonic expression as a means to convey forces beyond the statical, such as cultural, economic, and technological.




Tectonics in Architecture

Tectonics in architecture is defined as "the science or art of construction, both in relation to use and artistic design." It refers not just to the "activity of making the materially requisite construction that answers certain needs, but rather to the activity that raises this construction to an art form." It is concerned with the modeling of material to bring the material into presence: from the physical into the meta-physical world. The topic is, in part, a reaction to some contemporary trends in architecture. Part one discusses two current trends perceived to be negative: the effacement of history, both in an architectural and a temporal sense; and the tendency toward scenographic representation. Part two discusses the external references and internal references of buildings. These references are developed in two ways: a building's inter-consciousness and inner-consciousness. The former is concerned with the general circumstances of a building, (physical, social, political, economic), or in Heidegger's terms, the way in which it "gathers the fourfold," and the latter is concerned with the intrinsic properties of a building. The two are completely interdependent, however, this thesis is primarily concerned with a building's inner-consciousness. Part three defines tectonics first by discussing its relation with meta-physics; second by tracing an abbreviated lineage of nineteenth century German practitioners and theorists; third by describing different kinds of tectonic expression and finally by outlining only a few "subjects" of tectonic architecture. Part four examines two examples in detail - the 25bis Rue Franklin Apartment Building by August Perret, and the Richards Medical Research Laboratories by Louis Kahn. These are intended to give concrete examples of some of the issues and subjects discussed previously in the thesis. Tectonics is primarily concerned with the making of architecture in a modem world. Its value is seen as being a partial strategy for an architecture rooted in time and place, as well as an architecture of "depth." In bringing the physical into the meta-physical, tectonics begins to talk of a poetic of construction.
