Teddy's Train

Book Description

Teddy's Train is for four- and five-year-olds beginning English. It provides two levels of activity books with perforated tear-out pages. The books have a very low vocabulary load and lots of songs. Teddy's Train uses the metaphor of Teddy and his train to take children to different places. A specially designed long train poster is used to load the new vocabulary flashcards into the wagons. The tear-off sheets mean that teachers can use the materials flexibly to fit in with the general curriculum. Notes and a step-by-step illustrated guide to the action songs are printed on the back of the activity sheets for the teacher. Flashcards teach basic vocabulary.

The Dominant Strain

Book Description

Beatrix smiled a little wearily. Intimate friends are sometimes cloying, and she felt a certain irritation rising within her, as she watched Sally's bright face under her French toque, and listened to the easy stream of chatter which issued from Sally's lips. Sally had never faced such a crisis as the one confronting Beatrix, that day. Moreover, she had dimples, and it was impossible to believe in the sympathy of a person whose dimples insisted upon coming into sight, even in the midst of serious discussion.

Shark vs. Train

Book Description

Shark VS. Train! WHO WILL WIN?! If you think Superman vs. Batman would be an exciting matchup, wait until you see Shark vs. Train. In this hilarious and wacky picture book, Shark and Train egg each other on for one competition after another, including burping, bowling, Ping Pong, piano playing, pie eating, and many more! Who do YOU think will win, Shark or Train? [star] "This is a genius concept." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review [star] "Lichtenheld's snarling shark and grimacing train are definitely ready for a fight, and his scenarios gleefully play up the absurdity. The combatants' expressions are priceless when they lose. A glum train in smoky dejection, or a bewildered, crestfallen shark? It's hard to choose; both are winners." -- Kirkus, starred review

A Thousand Consolations

Book Description

Moving, entertaining, and witty, A Thousand Consolations is a literary romantic comedy for fans of David Nicholls’s Us and Emma Straub’s Modern Lovers. Paula doesn’t put much faith in the candles she designs for her customers, which promise to cure everything from unrequited love to ingrown toenails; it’s just a business she started after her husband’s untimely death put an end to their joint dream of a career on the stage. Believing she may have somehow contributed to Teddy’s illness, Paula is too crippled by guilt to pursue the dream of acting on her own, and too bitter to believe she’ll ever be happy again. Then she meets Héctor, a former concert pianist seeking refuge from the Mexican narcos who severed his fingers and threatened worse. With great charm and wit, Héctor seduces her into believing in a life in which hope coexists with disappointment, happiness with loss. Paula begins to believe that love is a possibility after all. But will Héctor be allowed to remain in Canada, or be sent back to an unknown fate? A Thousand Consolations is a surprisingly funny novel in which virtuosity, philosophy, and humour endure despite the modern blights of refugee politics and the threat of narcoterrorism.

Teddy's War

Book Description

To Elias Gunnarson, his dad, Teddy, was part of “the greatest generation,” a man who fought valiantly in World War II, was honorably discharged, married his high school sweetheart, and lived happily ever after. Right? Wrong! The truth, he finds, lies shrouded in an intricately complex web bearing only superficial resemblance to the terrible reality lived by those who battled from the sands of Omaha Beach to the horrors of Dachau. As letters, videos, stories, and memories unfold the true tale of Teddy’s war, Elias learns that the lives of his mother, his father, and his father’s brother, Jake, were not what they seemed, and that dying a hero does not absolve a person from the sins of his past. In Teddy’s War, author Donald Willerton has crafted a heroic story of how one man’s love for his brother immerses them both in the life-changing horrors of World War II. It is a family saga built around the bond between two brothers, an action-filled story of how the war drove them into the darkest corners of humanity, and a philosophical inquiry into the central questions of love and loyalty.
