The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1858, Vol. 36 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1858, Vol. 36 Accompanying him, I found the patient, 19 years Old, exsanguine, with quick pulse, and greatly exhausted from loss Of blood. I found that she had been attended, at the time of her delivery, by a German midwife, who stated that, after a brief labour, she had given birth to a male infant, weighing ten and one-half pounds. She also stated that the after-birth soon came away, accompanied by a large tumour, which descended into the vagina. This tumour she supposed to be a mole or false conception, and she stated that it was as large as a cannon-ball. The flooding, at the time, she described as terrific, producing protracted syncope. A day or two previous to my first visit, whilst making an effort to evacuate the bowels, the tumour had descended through the os externum and became suspended between the patient's thighs. All her efforts to remove the tumour proving unavailing, the midwife had sent for the gentlemen above mentioned for that purpose, and they now associated me with them in the treatment of the case. Book Description

Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1867, Vol. 53 During the past summer my attention was directed to the subject of wounds of veins and the arrest of venous hemorrhage by the application of the ligature, a procedure that I have been compelled to adopt in five thigh amputations with uniform success. Extending my investigations, it occurred to me to examine more minutely this much neglected branch of surgical pathology, with its attending and resulting accidents, and to pub lish, possibly, a series of papers on the injuries of special veins, confining my researches to the large trunks of the neck and extremities. Having collected a large mass of facts as a result of that undertaking, this paper, elucidating some points in the surgical pathology of the internal jugular vein, is now presented to the profession as the first attempt that has been made to classify the not very numerous isolated cases of wounds of that vessel. My aim has been to make an impartial examination of all the cases, and deduce from it the most convenient and successful plan of treatment. The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1869, Vol. 57 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1869, Vol. 57 There is no subject more interesting and important than the investi gation of the psychical or intellectual and moral faculties of man, with their modes of action and the diversities which they manifest in different individuals. Upon an accurate knowledge of these subjects must depend, in a great measure, the progress of civilization and the establishment of a sound social system based upon moral principles. The attempts of nu merous philosophers to treat this subject on metaphysical principles have proved utter failures. This necessarily results from the method which has been pursued. They have been limited to the contemplation of the work ings of their own minds and of a limited number of associates. A certain amount of correct knowledge may be acquired in this manner, but the great varieties manifested in the numerous masses of individuals and races, and in the conditions of the intellect as instanced in mental affections and diseases, cannot be understood or comprehended from so small a field of observation.
