The Application of Operations Research to Architecture

Book Description

The introduction of numerical methodologies to Architecture is very recent, however, the last ten years has seen the application of operations research to many of the problems of Architecture previously considered to be non-numeric. This paper reviews the panoply of these applications under the headings of simulation, optimization and design systems. Well established areas of application of simulation include building services (air-conditioning, lighting, acoustics, sunshading and shadows, thermal environment), vertical transportation in buildings, planning regulations, and to a lesser extent queuing and games. Simulation is now being used as a tool to gain insight into problem- solving in the architectural context. Mathematical programming and various heuristic optimization techniques have been used. Typical applications include layout planning, site development, house design, locating human activities, a/c duct design, materials selection and various environmental control systems. Design systems using a combination of simulation and optimization techniques are described. Clustering methods for the elucidation of system structure are mentioned. The paper concludes with comments on the problems of applying operations research techniques. An extensive list of references is included.

Community-Based Operations Research

Book Description

This edited volume is an introduction to diverse methods and applications in operations research focused on local populations and community-based organizations that have the potential to improve the lives of individuals and communities in tangible ways. The book's themes include: space, place and community; disadvantaged, underrepresented or underserved populations; international and transnational applications; multimethod, cross-disciplinary and comparative approaches and appropriate technology; and analytics. The book is comprised of eleven original submissions, a re-print of a 2007 article by Johnson and Smilowitz that introduces CBOR, and an introductory chapter that provides policy motivation, antecedents to CBOR in OR/MS, a theory of CBOR and a comprehensive review of the chapters. It is hoped that this book will provide a resource to academics and practitioners who seek to develop methods and applications that bridge the divide between traditional OR/MS rooted in mathematical models and newer streams in 'soft OR' that emphasize problem structuring methods, critical approaches to OR/MS and community engagement and capacity-building.

Operations Research

Book Description

This book ‘Operations Research: Theory and Practice’ provides various concepts, theoretical and practical knowledge and develops the techno-managerial skills in the field of engineering. All the angles and approaches of operations applicable to both industrial and institutional needs are presented. It also provides an insight into the historical development of Operations Research. Examples and problems from usual situations that occur in industries are presented wherever necessary. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Community Operational Research

Book Description

"This is the book I have been waiting for. Community Operational Research has shown that analysis can be used not only for, but also with, community groups, helping them to gain more control of their situations. What Midgley and Ochoa-Arias' volume does is provide not only rich examples of grass-roots practice, but also thought-provoking theoretical explorations. The editors have a point of view, but they allow space for debate with those who interpret Community OR differently." Jonathan Rosenhead (Emeritus Professor of Operational Research, London School of Economics and Political Science; Ex-President of the ORS)
