Sanjoy's Assam

Book Description

A vision for progress in the North East through peaceful means On 4 July 1997, Sanjoy Ghase, head of the non-governmental organizationAVARD in the North East, was abducted. The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) claimed responsibility for this act. Sanjay never returned, and mystery still shrouds his disappearance. This exceptional collection of Sanjoy's writings and diaries, put together by his wife and colleague, Sumita Ghose, vividly portrays his journey of self-discovery as an activist. It speaks of San joy's early commitment to social work, which found expression in his pursuit of rural management studies at IRMA, Anand, and led to his setting up the Uttar Rajasthan Milk Union Limited (URMUL) in Bikaner. After nine years in Rajasthan, in April 1996, Sanjoy moved with his family and seven like-minded colleagues to live and work in Majuli, Assam, the world's largest river island, situated on the mighty Brahmaputra. Despite being Assam's spiritual centre, Majuli is plagued by extensive and rapid land erosion, dismal communications, and lack of employment opportunities, health care and educational facilities. The group's success in providing the people information, flood relief and in mobilizing over 30,000 women, children and men to protect a 1.7 kilometre stretch of their island from erosion drew grear public support, much to the discomfort of the ULFA and the local contractors. While he analyses the problems of the North East-ranging from the alienation of the educated unemployed youth to the tensions created by the influx of Bangladeshi immigrants-Sanjoy also evokes the incredible richness of the society and culture of the region and of Assam in particular. Sensitive and insightful, Sanjoy's Assam affirms the groundswell for constructive and dynamic social action, and becomes an indictment of the use of terrorism as a means to achieve social justice.

The Lost Legacy of the Nilgiris

Book Description

The book has a background of more than 10 years of research. Nilgiris has a rich history and heritage as it was the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. Many of the annual tourism events, held in the district headquarters of Ootacamund or better known as Ooty, are still the remnants of the British colonisation. The idea occurred when the author found many attractive old British buildings and became interested in their history. Soon she realized that many little details are not included in history books, and therefore she decided to pen down all her investigations for the Nilgiris people. Nilgiris is in a way lucky to have been the summer capital, here the level of the English language is good, buildings have stood the test of time and people have adapted to many changes. It is sincerely hoped that this book will enhance people’s knowledge and improve their awareness of the rich local history and heritage to preserve them. As it is a favourite haunt of tourists, it also has a splash of tourism-related information. Therefore, this book will be cherished and preserved by anyone who loves the Nilgiris, which was once known as the Nila mountain where Goddess Nila Devi was presumed to have lived.

My Country First

Book Description

"The India China Youth Exchange programme was a new generation approach to strengthen bilateral relationships and mutual trust between India and China. It was launched in November 2006, when the first batch of 100 youth member delegates from both countries was reciprocally exchanged; this was continued in subsequent years. The long-term objective of the exchange was to promote people-to-people contacts between the two countries in order to boost the exchange of ideas and sharing of knowledge on socio-economic, cultural and developmental aspects. The focus of this book is on the sixth batch of the exchange programme, held from 19th to 29th September 2011. This batch’s visit was considered to be the most historic event in the history of Indo-China diplomatic relations, which was also coincidentally organized on the eve of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of India and the People’s Republic of China. The visit was an eye-opener for the Indian delegates who were exposed to a rich and varied spectrum of China’s developmental activities, many of them unique and innovative. These included sports tourism, industrial tourism, the Chinese work ethic, their patriotism, their commitment to the environment and more. The author, an experienced youth development officer, who accompanied the 200 strong delegation to China in 2011, outlines his experiences. He strongly believes that we could learn a lot from China if we can implement many of their innovative schemes. This would help propel our economy on a rapid growth trajectory. "

A Trans Himalayan Journey to Mount Kailash

Book Description

Kailash is considered to be the center of our planet and is an attraction to many. It attracted me too for years, and I finally could make this journey only in 2015, traveling for 21 days, crossing the formidable Himalayas through the high Himalayan Lipulekh Pass into Tibet. The book is a compilation of my personal experiences in this journey through the classical route followed by a lot of pilgrims and holy men in the past. I have tried to capture the minute details of this life-changing journey as best as possible in the various chapters. A day-to-day account with illustrations provides the reader a flavor of this journey in great detail. A section of this book is devoted to help future travelers with the preparations they need to do, both physical and mental, and the safety aspects to be followed. It also has a few lines on High Altitude Illness. While preparing for this important pilgrimage, I could not find a lot of vital information and facts initially. I tried to collect this information from various sources, and after reading them and understanding them, I felt very confident to do this yatra.
