The Boogeyman Chronicles

Book Description

On the rare occasion that I would share my story with people, I would get the same reaction... Astonishment, followed by the command, "YOU SHOULD WRITE A BOOK!" Every time, I would brush the suggestion aside, not really taking it seriously. Until... One day in 2021, I just felt like I should get my story out there in my own words. This rendition of my encounters is a simple, pared-down telling of every paranormal encounter I have ever had... All forty-plus years worth. Since I'm extremely private, putting myself out there is not easy for me. As far as proper grammar goes, please bear with me. I'm a simple Southern girl from the USA and the way I speak and write might not be proper, but it is me. I did work with an editor to make it more intelligible, but I was reticent about having my Southernness removed entirely. My prose may not sound correct at times, but that's just who I am. I really hope you enjoy this book. Maybe I'll have more encounters to share in the future, and I'll write a Part two.

The Cinematic Boogeyman

Book Description

In the 1978 horror film classic Halloween, little Tommy Doyle asks his babysitter Laurie Strode "what is the Boogeyman?" This book answers this question by assessing the qualities that create the Boogeyman persona in Western popular culture particularly in the fairytale and the modern horror film. Using an archetypal approach derived from the work of Carl Jung and his successors Erich Neumann and Edgar Herzog, the book assesses the figure of the Boogeyman through an interdisciplinary lens that incorporates research from the fields of psychology, philosophy, and film studies. The book begins with an examination of the key traits associated with Bluebeard, a quintessential example of the folkloric Boogeyman featured in Charles Perrault's 1697 collection of fairytales. Through an intense comparative analysis, it highlights the presence of similar qualities in the popular villains from the contemporary American slasher movies of the 1970s and '80s. Specifically, these characters include Michael Myers from Halloween (1978), Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th (1980), and Freddy Krueger featured in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). This examination situates these terrifying antagonists within a larger context of monstrosity and simultaneously establishes their role as cinematic manifestations of the folkloric Boogeyman.

The Lunch-Box Chronicles

Book Description

Child Magazine Best Book of the Year "For me, parenting is like dieting. Every day, I wake up filled with resolve and good intentions, perfection in view, and every day I somehow stray from the path. The difference is with dieting, I usually make it to lunch. . . ." With the candor and often hilarious outlook that have made her a beloved commentator on NPR, Marion Winik takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through modern parenthood, with all of its attendant anxieties and joys. A single mother with two small boys, Winik knows exactly what she's talking about, from battles over breakfast and bedtime to the virtues of pre-packaged food and weightier issues like sex education and sibling rivalry. Part memoir and part survival guide, The Lunch-Box Chronicles is an engaging philosophy of parenting from a staunch realist, who knows that kids and their parents both will inevitably fall far short of perfection, and that a "good enough mom" really is, in fact, good enough.
