Key to Salvation & the Lamp of Souls

Book Description

This is the first English translation of Miftah al-falah, a thirteenth century Sufi text, written by Ibn Ata Allah, one of the great masters of the Shadhili Sufi order. It is considered to be one of his most important works because it sets out the principles of actual Sufi mystical practices, shedding light on the sacred invocations, and associated practices, such as the spiritual retreat. Written in a clear, lucid style, it offers a glimpse into the Sufi world of the 7th Islamic century and allows us to see almost at first hand how the novice was guided by the Sufi Shaykh and, above all, the purpose and preparation involved in engaging in the invocation, dhikhru'llah. Ibn Ata' Allah sets out to define it, to explain its nature and power, to show its results and to prove that it is part of the Prophet's Sunna, or practice. The author goes to great lengths to point out many Qur'anic verses where dhikru'llah is mentioned and cites many noted authorities.

The Political Writings

Book Description

Alfarabi was among the first to explore the tensions between the philosophy of classical Greece and that of Islam, as well as of religion generally. His writings, extraordinary in their breadth and deep learning, have had a profound impact on Islamic and Jewish philosophy. This volume presents four of Alfarabi's most important texts, making his political thought available to classicists, medievalists, and scholars of religion and Byzantine and Middle Eastern studies. In a clear prose translation by Charles E. Butterworth, these treatises provide a valuable introduction to the teachings of Alfarabi and to the development of Islamic political philosophy. All of these texts are based on new Arabic editions. Two of the texts—Book of Religion and Harmonization of the Two Opinions of the Two Sages: Plato the Divine and Aristotle—appear in English for the first time. The translations of the other two works—Selected Aphorisms and chapter five of the Enumeration of the Sciences—differ markedly from those previously known to English-language readers.Butterworth situates each essay in its historical, literary, and philosophical context. His notes help the reader follow Alfarabi's text and identify persons, places, and events. English-Arabic and Arabic-English glossaries of terms further assist the reader.

The Meaning of the Kalimah Al-Tawheed

Book Description

Tawheed is to single out Allaah in all types of worship whether it is connected to the heart, or in speech or in actions. All worship is to be directed to the Lord of the Worlds, the only One who has the right to be worshipped in truth. Allaah is the only One deserving of worship since he is the Only Creator, Only Sustainer, the Owner of the Day of Judgement, Owner of everything in existence and the one who gives life and death. To direct worship to other than Allaah is the ultimate crime, the greatest oppression one can commit, it is the crime of Shirk. A person who commits Shirk is expelled from the fold of Islaam and all his deeds are nullified by Allaah. So therefore every Muslim should have knowledge of what is Tawheed since this is the greatest right of Allaah upon His creation, it is the ultimate justice to give the right of worship to the One who deserves it. And also to know what negates this Tawheed which is Shirk and how to avoid this ultimate crime. To have knowledge of these matters is obligatory upon every Muslim, male and female. Shaykh Al-Fawzan has explained this in detail and it is recommended that a person continuously learns Tawheed, implements it in his life , for indeed every goodness , happiness is connected to the implementation of Tawheed in belief and action.
